Starting Pitchers
Ronel Blanco is scheduled to start for Houston against San Diego left-hander Robbie Ray. Blanco is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP through 14.2 innings since returning to the Houston rotation. He has allowed 11 hits and five home runs while recording 16 strikeouts against eight walks. Ray is 10-6 with a 3.08 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP through 122.2 innings. The veteran has surrendered 101 hits and 15 home runs while collecting 107 strikeouts against 57 walks.
Astros Begin Their Road Trip Following an Inconsistent Homestand
Houston has gone 3-2 over its last five completed games. The Astros recently lost two of three games against Toronto, falling 3-1 and 5-4 in 10 innings around a 7-2 victory. Houston won its previous two games against Texas by scores of 7-3 and 5-4. The Astros scored 24 runs and allowed 17 during those five contests.
The Astros are batting .246 with a .322 on-base percentage and a .416 slugging percentage this season. Houston has collected 965 hits, hit 157 home runs and scored 540 runs, averaging approximately 4.7 runs per game. Its pitching staff owns a 4.60 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP, with 1,020 strikeouts against 484 walks.
Power is Houston’s most significant offensive advantage in this matchup. The Astros have hit 35 more home runs than San Diego and hold a 34-point advantage in slugging percentage. Houston has also scored 54 more runs despite the teams playing nearly the same number of games.
However, Blanco’s early performances since returning from elbow surgery create considerable uncertainty. He has failed to complete five innings in any of his three starts and has allowed 12 earned runs. Five of the 11 hits against him have left the ballpark, making it difficult to trust Houston’s starting-pitching situation against an improving San Diego lineup.
Padres Return Home With a Significant Pitching Advantage
San Diego has gone 3-2 over its last five completed games. The Padres recently lost 10-4 and 5-1 at Arizona around a 9-4 victory. San Diego won its previous two games against San Francisco by scores of 5-4 and 6-5. The Padres scored 25 runs while allowing 28 across those five contests.
The Padres are batting .235 with a .312 on-base percentage and a .382 slugging percentage. San Diego has accumulated 891 hits, 122 home runs and 486 runs this season. Its pitching staff carries a 4.21 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, with 932 strikeouts against 400 walks.
San Diego’s season-long offensive statistics trail Houston’s numbers, but the Padres have shown considerable improvement since the All-Star break. They recently produced nine runs and 16 hits against Arizona and have scored at least four runs in four of their last five games. San Diego has also performed well at Petco Park, winning 32 of its first 57 home games.
Ray provides the Padres with their clearest advantage. He has won seven consecutive decisions and posted a 1.65 ERA during that successful stretch. His season ERA is more than four runs lower than Blanco’s mark, and he has demonstrated the ability to work considerably deeper into games.
San Diego must still respect Houston’s home-run potential. Ray has issued 57 walks, and unnecessary baserunners could become costly against an Astros lineup with 157 home runs. However, the left-hander has allowed only 15 homers through 122.2 innings and has generally avoided the damaging outings that have troubled Blanco.
Houston Astros vs San Diego Padres Picks and Prediction
-
Pick: San Diego Padres Moneyline
I am taking San Diego on the moneyline. Houston owns the stronger season offense, but the starting-pitching disparity is too significant to overlook. Ray has posted a 3.08 ERA through more than 122 innings, while Blanco owns a 7.36 ERA and has allowed five home runs in only 14.2 innings.
The Padres also own a strong 32-25 home record. Houston is slightly above .500 on the road, but its pitching staff has issued more walks than any other team and carries a 4.60 ERA. San Diego has the better season ERA, lower WHIP and a substantially stronger starting pitcher for the series opener.
Houston’s power prevents me from laying 1.5 runs with the Padres. The Astros can change the game with one or two swings, while San Diego’s inconsistent offense may struggle to create significant separation. I prefer the Padres moneyline in a matchup that could remain close despite Ray’s advantage.
-
Pick: Over 8.5
I lean over if the total is set at 8.5 runs. Houston’s last five games produced an average of 8.2 combined runs, while San Diego’s last five averaged 10.6. Four of the Padres’ last five contests produced at least nine runs, including three that reached double digits.
Blanco is the primary reason to consider the over. He has allowed at least four earned runs in two of his three starts and has surrendered a home run approximately once every three innings. San Diego’s recent offensive improvement gives the Padres a reasonable opportunity to score five or six runs before turning the game over to Houston’s bullpen.
Ray should limit the Astros for stretches, but Houston averages approximately 4.7 runs and ranks among baseball’s better home-run-hitting teams. The Padres’ 4.21 team ERA and 1.33 WHIP are respectable rather than dominant. I would play over 8.5, consider over eight at a higher price and pass if the total opens at nine or above.
Projected Final Score: San Diego Padres 6, Houston Astros 4
