Royals out of playoff picture
There will be no return to the playoffs this year for the Kansas City Royals (78-78). KC saw its last chance of making the AL Wild Card disappear by starting September 4-8 and with just six games left on the schedule, it trails Cleveland and Houston by 6.0 games in the last postseason spot. The Royals are 8-11 this month but there was at least some cheer over the weekend as they took their last home series 2-1 against high-flying Toronto, including a 20-1 blowout, which was the team's biggest win of the season.
Cole Ragans will start for KC on Tuesday. The left-hander has struggled to follow up his breakout season in 2024 this time around, with injuries also playing their part. Ragans has been restricted to 11 starts, going 2-3 with a 5.16 ERA. The strikeout numbers remain encouraging, with 80 Ks in 52.1 innings. The pitcher landed on the IL for the second time this year back in June with a rotator cuff strain and was activated in September after more than three months out. Ragans pitched 3.2 innings in his return against Seattle, giving up two runs and striking out four batters.

Angels miss postseason again
The Los Angeles Angels (70-86) are resigned to yet another year without October baseball, missing the postseason for a league-high 11th consecutive year while putting up their 10th straight losing season, another MLB worst. They did at least get to see a landmark for franchise icon Mike Trout this week: the outfielder launched his 400th career home run against Colorado, a 485ft bomb at Coors Field. Trout is slashing .229/.357/.415 this year with 22 home runs and 59 RBIs, while his mark of 125 is the highest he has managed to record since the 2019 season.
Sam Aldegheri makes the start for the Angels on Tuesday, his first of 2025. Aldegheri has spent most of the season in the minors, making just two appearances in MLB out of the bullpen. His last outing back in July was a rough one. The lefty was rocked in relief by the Rangers, giving up five hits, four walks and four runs in 2.0 innings.
Royals vs. Angels pick
Spread Pick for Royals vs. Angels
- Angels ML (4 units)
I like the Angels to come back from their awful recent run and take the win here in front of their own fans. While recent numbers look bad, it is on the road they have had most trouble, going 3-1 in their last four home games before their 1-9 road trip that ended Tuesday. The Angels have also had the edge over KC this year, taking the series in Kansas City and outscoring the Royals 12-8. The Royals have gone 35-40 on the road in 2025. The Angels hit lefties better than Tuesday's opponent, with a season OPS of .701 against KC's .652 (26th in MLB).
Take the Angels on the moneyline.
Over/under Pick for Royals vs. Angels
- Over 9 (5 units)
There is power in the Angels' bats, even if they lack consistency. The team has put up 97 home runs at home this year, the ninth best mark in MLB, and with Ragans still finding his way back after a long injury lay-off they will be confident of putting up a big score in a game I am backing to go past the over. The Royals, too, will be confident against Aldegheri, whose last MLB outing ended in disaster. The Angels are 41-30-4 on the over this yea,r playing at home and 10-6 on the over in their last 16 games.
Take the over.
