angels vs. royals prediction

On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals meet in the first game of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium, and we will set you up with an Angels vs. Royals prediction to go along with Free MLB Picks. Los Angeles has yet to announce a starter, while the Royals start Michael Lorenzen. Read on for a prediction on the score and a game breakdown.

Lorenzen Gets the Call

Michael Lorenzen will toe the rubber in the first game of this series with the Angels. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six in five innings last Tuesday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision.

  • The only hard contact allowed was a solo home run off the bat of Colson Montgomery in the second inning. Lorenzen was able to cruise through five frames but could not record an out after coming back out for the sixth, leading to three more runs charged against him.
  • Lorenzen has now allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 16 hits over his last two starts, though he has tallied up six strikeouts on both occasions, which is one below his season high. Lorenzen has just one win over his last eight starts and will look to change that next week against the Angels.
  • According to yahoo.com, Lorenzen got five swings and misses on 78 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 27 percent. He will try to get back in the win column as he carries a 4.62 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 100/33 K/BB ratio (113 innings) into this Tuesday’s matchup against the Angels.

Halos Starter Unannounced

The Angels have yet to officially announce a starter for the first game of this series with the Royals. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (3.68 ERA) has the starting assignment for the Angels in the series finale against the Astros Monday night. He allowed six runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings in a 7-3 road loss to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Kikuchi is winless over his last three starts, pitching to a 6.60 ERA. Kikuchi is 1-5 with a 5.67 ERA in 15 career starts against the Astros, for whom he went 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts last season following his acquisition at the trade deadline.

  • The Angels placed left-hander Tyler Anderson (left oblique strain) on the 15-day IL and signed right-hander Jose Urena to the active roster.
  • Urena (0-1, 5.00 ERA with four teams this season) could fill a need as a long reliever or a starter for the Angels, who have had injuries to their rotation. "Right now, it would be bullpen. It would be length, it'd be protection," Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said. "And then as we move forward, we'll figure out the exact role.

Kansas City Royals ML (4 UNITS)

The Royals come into this home meeting against the Angels at a critical point in their race for a playoff spot. They come into play Monday, three games back of the third and final spot. This is a key series for the Royals, facing an Angels team that lacks any good quality starters at this juncture of the year. Los Angeles will likely trot out a bullpen game here, with Jose Urena getting the nod. He has not been sharp this season, holding a 5+ ERA, and has pitched for several teams this season. This is a big game for the Royals, and I expect Lorenzen to pitch a good game as they are fighting for their playoff lives. Take the Royals to win.

OVER (5 UNITS)

The Angels have remained competitive this season, holding a 64-72 record leading into action Monday night. With that said, the numbers are not particularly sharp for a Halos club that has lost most of its starting rotation to injury. They are bottom five in staff ERA and WHIP, while allowing the fourth most home runs. They are also second last in team batting average. They have played several low-scoring games, which they have won, but there has been an element of luck to the Halos' season, considering they are 27th in OBP and 27th in batting average allowed. Take the over, considering the type of unproven arms brought out in this game.
