Starting Pitchers

Los Angeles is scheduled to start Reid Detmers, who enters at 6-8 with a 3.47 ERA and excellent 1.05 WHIP through 179.0 innings. Detmers has allowed only 142 hits while recording 204 strikeouts against 46 walks and surrendering 19 home runs. Seattle counters with Bryce Miller, who is 4-9 with a 3.99 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 112.2 innings. Miller has allowed 94 hits and 20 home runs while striking out 112 and walking 36. The numbers give Los Angeles an advantage in the starting-pitching matchup. The Angels' starter owns the lower ERA and WHIP while averaging more than a strikeout per inning across a substantially larger workload. Seattle's starter has also been effective at limiting baserunners, but his 20 home runs allowed in only 112.2 innings stand out as the biggest concern in his profile.

Angels Need Their Pitching to Set the Tone

Los Angeles enters the series in difficult form, losing four of its last five games and three straight. The Angels dropped consecutive games to the Athletics by scores of 9-7 and 7-3 after suffering an 8-0 loss against Minnesota. Their only victory over the five-game sample was a 6-5 extra-inning decision against Minnesota. Los Angeles has scored 16 runs over those five games while allowing 32, and its 26-51 road record has been one of the club's biggest problems this season.

The offensive numbers help explain the Angels' 60-98 record. Los Angeles is batting .234 with a .310 on-base percentage and .369 slugging percentage while producing 635 runs, 1,234 hits and 151 home runs. The pitching staff has performed better relative to the offense, posting a 4.26 ERA and 1.35 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .239 batting average. Los Angeles has recorded 1,407 strikeouts, although its 620 walks have created additional traffic on the bases.

The Angels' clearest path to an upset comes from their starting pitching. Los Angeles has struggled to generate consistent offense and has been particularly poor away from home, but Friday's matchup gives it an opportunity to keep the game close early. The concern is what happens once the game moves beyond the starter. The Angels have surrendered at least seven runs in each game of their current three-game losing streak, and that makes protecting a small early lead difficult against a Seattle team playing much better baseball at T-Mobile Park than Los Angeles has played on the road.

Mariners Have the Home-Field Advantage

Seattle comes into Friday at 74-84 after splitting its last four games and going 3-2 across the five-game sample provided. The Mariners defeated Houston 6-5 in 10 innings Wednesday after being shut out 7-0 the previous night. Before returning home, Seattle took two of three games in Colorado, winning 5-4 and 2-1 around a 5-3 loss. The Mariners have scored 16 runs while allowing 22 across their last five, with seven of those opposing runs coming in the shutout loss to Houston.

Seattle's offensive production has been remarkably close to that of Los Angeles in several categories. The Mariners are batting .232 with a .312 on-base percentage and .378 slugging percentage while scoring 640 runs on 1,215 hits. Where Seattle has created greater separation is with power, hitting 179 home runs compared with 151 for Los Angeles. Seattle also owns the slightly better pitching ERA at 4.20, but the more significant difference is its 1.26 WHIP. The Mariners have issued only 423 walks compared with 620 by the Angels, although opponents are batting .252 against Seattle pitching.

The home-road split may be the most important team-level factor in the matchup. Seattle is 41-36 at T-Mobile Park, while Los Angeles is just 26-51 away from home. The Mariners have also won five of the first nine completed meetings between these teams, although the series has been competitive. Five of those nine games were decided by two runs or fewer, including four one-run decisions. That history suggests Seattle should not expect an easy night, particularly with the Angels holding the better starting-pitching numbers Friday.

Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners Picks and Prediction

Pick: Seattle Mariners Moneyline

Seattle is the side despite Los Angeles owning the starting-pitching advantage. The difference comes from the broader team profile and the extreme home-road split. Seattle is 41-36 at T-Mobile Park compared with the Angels' 26-51 road record, and Los Angeles enters on a three-game losing streak in which it has been outscored 24-10. Seattle also has the superior power numbers with 179 home runs and owns the better team WHIP at 1.26 compared with 1.35 for Los Angeles. The Angels' starter gives them a legitimate chance to stay close, which makes the Mariners less appealing if the eventual moneyline becomes heavily inflated. At a reasonable price, however, Seattle's home performance, bullpen-level statistical advantage implied by the team WHIP, recent form and 5-4 season-series lead make the Mariners the preferred side.

Pick: Under 8.5 or Higher

The pitching matchup points toward the under if the total opens at 8.5 or higher. Los Angeles brings a starter with a 3.47 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 204 strikeouts over 179 innings, while Seattle counters with a 3.99 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Neither offense has been particularly productive over the full season, with the Angels scoring 635 runs and the Mariners only slightly better at 640. The head-to-head results strengthen the case: five of the nine completed meetings have produced seven runs or fewer, including totals of four, one, eight, eight and three runs. Seattle's recent 2-1 victory and Los Angeles' recent shutout losses also illustrate how low these offenses can go when the pitching controls the game. The number matters, but 8.5 provides enough cushion to back the under.

Final Picks: Seattle Mariners Moneyline and Under 8.5 or Higher
