Dodgers losing grip on division

The Dodgers have locked themselves into the postseason, but they have seen their lead in the West evaporate to just 1.5 games following their series opening loss on Tuesday night. They have a 10-5 record in their last 15 games. Los Angeles’ pitching had a 3.60 ERA over the last 30 days, the second-best mark in the National League over that stretch. This season, the staff ranks ninth in the league with a 4.03 team ERA and seventh with a 1.27 WHIP. Their 1,443 strikeouts are most in the N.L. and opponents were hitting .233 against him. Dodgers’ starters have a 47-36 record with a 3.78 ERA while their relievers had 42 saves, 41 wins and a 4.33 ERA.

Offensively, Los Angeles leads the National League with 798 runs and are third with a .253 team batting average. They also top the league with 234 home runs and 567 walks. Shohei Ohtani is hitting .320 over 20 games in September, with eight home runs, 14 RBIs and 18 runs. He leads the majors with 142 runs scored and is second in the N.L. with 53 home runs and fifth with 99 RBIs. Freddie Freeman sits fourth in the N.L. with a .292 batting average and second with 39 doubles. The first baseman reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 games prior to Wednesday.

Starter spotlight

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto makes his 30th start of the season and the Dodgers are 16-13 when he goes.
  • In his last three starts he allowed two earned runs, three hits, nine walks and struck out 27 over 21 innings, but didn’t earn a decision.
  • Is tied for eighth in the N.L. with 194 strikeouts.
  • Opponents are hitting .183 against the righty, with 14 home runs and 57 walks.
  • Yamamoto is 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA in five career starts versus Arizona.

Diamondbacks in dog fight

Following their big win in the series opener on Tuesday, the Diamondbacks were one game back of the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League, tied with the Reds. Prior to Wednesday, they won three straight games and seven of their last nine. Pitching for the club had a 3.84 ERA while the team went 16-9 over the last 30 days. This year, Arizona’s staff is 12th in the league with a 4.43 ERA, and their 1.31 WHIP ranks 11th in the N.L. The team’s starters were 55-43 with a 4.18 ERA and their bullpen arms have provided the team with 42 saves, 25 wins and a 4.84 ERA.

Through 157 games, Arizona’s offense was fourth in the National League with a .252 batting average, and their 778 runs were the third most. They are also third in the league with 210 home runs and seventh with 117 stolen bases. Corbin Carroll is 10th in the N.L. with 30 stolen bases and he leads the league with 17 triples. He went into Wednesday with an eight-game hitting streak and an 11-game on-base streak. Geraldo Perdomo, who drove in the winning run on Tuesday, leads the club with a .291 batting average and his 98 RBIs are the sixth most in the league.

Starter spotlight

  • This will be Zac Gallen’s 33rd start of the year and the DBacks are an even 16-16 in his outings.
  • Won on Saturday against the Phillies after allowing three runs, four hits and two walks in seven innings.
  • Over his last five games, the right-hander went 4-1 with a 2.56 ERA.
  • Has allowed 30 home runs and 63 walks and teams are hitting .236 against him.
  • Gallen is 2-5 with a 3.90 ERA in 15 career starts against the Dodgers.

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks Picks

Spread Pick for Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks

  • Dodgers -154 (5 units)

While fighting for their own postseason lives, the Diamondbacks have played the spoiler role against the Dodgers over the past month, winning three of their last four games (prior to Wednesday) against the top team in the West. They have their top starter in this matchup and Gallen has 15 quality starts this season. The DBacks’ hurler has given up three runs or more in four of his last eight starts, so there’s been some bumps down the stretch. His offense has to face off against arguably one of the toughest pitchers to hit against over the past month. Yamamoto allowed just one hit in each of his last three starts, allowed three earned runs total in his last four games and struck out 10 batters in three of his last four efforts. The only issue for the Dodgers’ starter has been walks, of which he issued six last time. I fully expect him to reel that in here.

Take the Dodgers.

Over/Under Pick for Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks

  • Under 8.5 (5 units)

This matchup features two of the more productive offenses in the National League, and both are still scraping and clawing for postseason rights. The regular season finale between the division rivals also features their best starters going head-to-head. Yamamoto allowed two runs or less in seven of his last 10 starts, and he’s struck out at least six batters in each of those efforts. The Japanese native has given up just four home runs in his last 11 starts, so as much as he’s been giving up too many walks, he’s not making mistake pitches. Gallen allowed three runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts and his efforts here could be the difference between this being his last start of the year or his playoff tune-up. The under is 6-2-2 in the last ten games between these two.

Take the under.
