Starting Pitchers

Blake Snell gets the start for Los Angeles and enters Monday at 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through nine innings. Snell has allowed nine hits while recording 15 strikeouts against three walks and has not surrendered a home run. Colorado counters with Tomoyuki Sugano, who is 12-5 with a 4.43 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 113.2 innings. Sugano has allowed 116 hits while striking out 66, walking 26 and surrendering 24 home runs. Colorado has the larger body of work from its starter, while Los Angeles has the stronger strikeout rate in the limited sample.

Dodgers Bring the Stronger Overall Profile

Los Angeles enters Monday atop the NL West at 74-50 and has been excellent away from home with a 37-25 road record. The Dodgers have won three of their last five games, with victories by scores of 3-1, 4-2 and 5-4 in 10 innings. Their two losses came by scores of 4-1 and 5-4. Even with the recent loss, Los Angeles continues to show the balance that has helped it maintain one of the better records in the National League.

The Dodgers are batting .259 with a .336 on-base percentage and .427 slugging percentage. They have collected 1,080 hits, scored 614 runs and hit 158 home runs. Their pitching staff owns a 3.69 ERA and 1.16 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .217 batting average. Los Angeles pitchers have recorded 1,110 strikeouts against 388 walks.

The Dodgers hold the edge in nearly every major team category. They own the better batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored, home-run total, ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average. The biggest concern is the limited recent workload from their starter, but the overall team profile is substantially stronger than Colorado’s.

Rockies Need Coors Field to Create Offense

Colorado enters Monday at 49-74 overall and 27-32 at home. The Rockies have won three of their last five games, with victories of 5-2, 6-4 and 3-2. Their two losses were more decisive, coming by scores of 7-1 and 9-0. Colorado has therefore shown some ability to string together competitive performances, but inconsistency remains a major issue.

The Rockies are batting .254 with a .322 on-base percentage and .419 slugging percentage. They have collected 1,059 hits, scored 583 runs and hit 138 home runs. Their pitching staff has struggled, posting a 5.46 ERA and 1.51 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .288. Colorado pitchers have recorded 837 strikeouts against 400 walks.

Colorado’s offensive numbers are respectable, especially compared with many teams carrying a similar record, but the pitching remains the obvious weakness. The Rockies trail Los Angeles by a wide margin in ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average. At Coors Field, that becomes even more dangerous against a Dodgers club that already owns the stronger offensive profile.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies Picks and Prediction

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers ML

Los Angeles is the stronger side in this matchup. The Dodgers own a 25.5-game advantage in the standings and have been significantly better both offensively and on the mound. Their 3.69 team ERA compares favorably with Colorado’s 5.46 mark, while the Dodgers also own a major edge in WHIP at 1.16 compared with 1.51. Los Angeles has also controlled the season series, leading 7-3. Colorado’s home setting creates some volatility, but the broader matchup clearly favors the Dodgers.

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers ML

Pick: Over 10.5

The over is the preferred total if the number is set around 10.5. Colorado’s 5.46 team ERA and 1.51 WHIP create plenty of opportunities for Los Angeles to generate offense, while Coors Field adds further scoring upside. The Rockies have also shown enough offensive ability to contribute, scoring at least three runs in three of their last five games. Los Angeles owns the stronger pitching staff, but the combination of venue and Colorado’s season-long run-prevention problems makes the over the more attractive side of the total.

Take the Over if the total is set at 10.5.
