Starting Pitchers

Los Angeles is scheduled to start Blake Snell, who enters at 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 32 innings. He has allowed only 21 hits with 43 strikeouts, 14 walks and no home runs allowed. Miami counters with Ryan Gusto, who is 1-4 with a 4.23 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 72.1 innings. He has surrendered 80 hits and nine home runs while striking out 62 and walking 22. The numbers give Los Angeles a significant starting pitching advantage, although its starter has worked a considerably smaller number of innings this season.

Los Angeles Arrives on a Seven-Game Winning Streak

Los Angeles enters Friday with an 89-57 overall record and a strong 42-29 mark on the road. The Dodgers have won seven consecutive games and all five of their most recent contests, including victories of 14-1, 3-2, 6-3, 7-5 and 6-5. That stretch has featured several different types of wins, from close one-run games to a dominant 13-run victory. Los Angeles also owns the best record in the NL West and enters this matchup with considerable momentum.

The Dodgers are batting .257 with 728 runs, 1,261 hits and 180 home runs. Los Angeles owns a .337 on-base percentage and .422 slugging percentage. The pitching numbers are equally impressive, with the staff carrying a 3.67 ERA and 1.16 WHIP while limiting opposing hitters to a .220 batting average. Dodgers pitchers have issued 447 walks while collecting 1,348 strikeouts.

Los Angeles enters with an advantage on both sides of the matchup. The Dodgers have scored 74 more runs than Miami while hitting 29 more home runs, and they hold the edge in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has also produced a lower ERA and WHIP while holding opponents to a significantly lower batting average. Combine those season-long advantages with a seven-game winning streak and a favorable starting pitching matchup, and Los Angeles has a strong statistical case.

Miami Tries to Stop a Three-Game Slide

Miami enters the series at 72-75 overall but has performed much better at home, where the Marlins are 43-32. They have lost three straight and four of their last five games. Those losses have come by scores of 15-14, 7-5, 9-4 and 6-5, with their lone victory during the stretch coming 10-3. Miami's recent games have featured plenty of offense, but the Marlins have struggled to consistently keep opponents off the scoreboard.

The Marlins are batting .249 with 654 runs, 1,219 hits and 151 home runs. Miami owns a .327 on-base percentage and .401 slugging percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.10 ERA and 1.28 WHIP while opposing hitters are batting .235. Miami has issued 506 walks and recorded 1,187 strikeouts.

Miami's 43-32 home record provides a reason to respect the Marlins in this matchup, and they have already taken two of three from Los Angeles this season. The larger concern is their recent run prevention. Miami has surrendered 37 runs over its last four games, including 15 in its most recent contest. That becomes especially problematic against a Los Angeles club that has scored at least six runs in four of its last five games and owns the better overall offensive profile.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Miami Marlins Picks and Prediction

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5

The Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 is the preferred side in this matchup. Los Angeles enters on a seven-game winning streak and owns substantial advantages in overall record, offensive production and pitching statistics. The biggest difference comes in the starting pitching matchup, where the Dodgers send out a starter carrying a 1.97 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 43 strikeouts in 32 innings against a Miami starter with a 4.23 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Miami's strong home record deserves consideration, but the Dodgers have the statistical advantages needed to win this game by multiple runs.

Pick: Over 8.0

Take the Over if the total is set at 8.0 or lower. Miami's last five games have produced combined totals of 29, 12, 13, 13 and 11 runs, and the Marlins have allowed at least six runs in four consecutive contests. Los Angeles has also scored 36 runs over its last five games, including 14 in its most recent outing. The Dodgers' starting pitching advantage could limit Miami, but Los Angeles has enough offensive firepower to do much of the work itself against a Miami staff carrying a 4.10 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.

Final Picks: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 and Over 8.0
