West Winning Dodgers Preparing for the Playoffs

Clayton Kershaw is expected to pitch the final regular-season game here in Seattle. The Dodgers clinched the National League West crown last week, their fourth straight and 12th in the past 13 years, with an 8-0 victory in Arizona.

  • Freddie Freeman homered twice and Shohei Ohtani and Andy Pages also went deep for the Dodgers, who scored all eight of their runs in the opening four innings.
  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched six scoreless innings.Β  "This is what I'm going to miss," said Kershaw, who has announced he will retire after this season. "Pitching, all that stuff is great. I love that, too. But getting to do this with a group of guys that all are working towards a collective goal for as long as we are, that's what you miss. The camaraderie, the bonding, everybody going through something hard and coming out on the other side. That's really special. You don't get that anywhere else."

While the defending World Series champion Dodgers are locked in as the NL's No. 3 seed and will face the third wild-card team in a best-of-three first-round series, it remains to be seen how the rotation will look for the postseason.

Mariners Locked Into First Round Bye

Seattle has yet to officially announce a starting pitcher for the final game of the regular season. The Mariners clinched the AL's No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.

  • They still have an outside shot at the league's top playoff berth, as they are a game behind Toronto and the New York Yankees entering play Saturday afternoon.
  • But, they do not have the tiebreaker with either of those clubs after losing the season series against both. "It does feel good. We were hoping to get that," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said of the bye. "Now we are in a position to get some guys some rest that we think need some rest. We can kind of get back physically to where we need to be, and then get ready as that week goes on so that we're ready to go."
  • Eugenio Suarez had three hits, including his 49th homer of the season, as the Mariners defeated Colorado 6-2 on Thursday for their seventh consecutive victory and 17th in the past 18 games. They've also tied a franchise record, set in 2001, with 11 straight wins at home.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Seattle Mariners Game Pick

Spread Pick for Dodgers vs. Mariners

  • Los Angeles Dodgers ML (4 units)

The Dodgers and Mariners are going to the postseason, and this final dress rehearsal may see some starting pitchers juggled in order to prepare each team for October. Considering both clubs hold a first-round bye, this game is turning out to be a meaningless affair. Seattle has yet to announce a starting pitcher, and Clayton Kershaw just made a relief appearance in the Dodgers' game Friday. Considering they have won 10 straight games against the Mariners, we might as well roll with the Dodgers here in a difficult game to handicap.

OVER/UNDER PICK for Dodgers vs. Mariners

  • UNDER (4 units)

Seattle has been on a huge run through the months of August and September, and they are locked into a first-round bye and the second-slotted wildcard. They have won 17 of their last 19 games overall, and this is turning out to be a meaningless contest leading into the final game of the regular season. The total has gone over in 13 of Seattle’s last 20 games facing National League opponents. Take the under.
