Los Angeles (9-1 in postseason) swept the Brewers in the NLCS, with their last game coming a week ago. Toronto (7-4 in postseason) trailed 3-2 in the ALCS but won the last two games to advance. Dodgers nearly unstoppable in repeat pursuit
The defending World Series champions are now just four wins from back-to-back titles and their third crown in six seasons. Their pitching absolutely dominated the Brewers, holding them to a combined four runs and 14 hits in four games.
Los Angeles' pitching has been sensational, allowing exactly one run in each of their last five games. In ten games, the staff has a 2.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and opponents hit just .173 against them. The starters have been standing on their heads, going 7-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 0.75 WHIP. Dodgers’ relievers have two wins, four saves and a 4.80 ERA in 27.2 innings. Alex Vesia earned both of the bullpen wins and has four saves with a 3.86 ERA in seven appearances. Roki Sasaki has also come on seven times, recording three saves while posting a 1.13 ERA and 0.63 WHIP.
The Dodgers’ offense comes into the series hitting .256 in the postseason, with 46 runs. They have a .315 BABIP and 32 of their 88 hits have been for extra bases, including 13 home runs. They’ve also struck out 93 times while drawing 35 walks. In one of the most impressive playoff performances of all time, Shohei Ohtani accounted for three of the team’s postseason home runs in last Friday’s Game 4, while also striking out 10 batters. He has five home runs and nine RBIs this postseason. Teoscar Hernandez added four homers and 11 RBIs, and Mookie Betts is hitting .293 with 12 hits.

Starter spotlight
- Blake Snell is the Dodgers’ starter in Game 1 and the team has won in each of his last six starts.
- The southpaw is 3-0 in three postseason starts, allowing a combined two runs, five hits and five walks while striking out 28 batters in 21 innings.
- He has struck out at least nine batters in five of his last six games and allowed zero runs in four of those efforts.
- Lifetime, Snell is 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA in eight starts at the Rogers Centre.
Blue Jays end decades-long draught
The Blue Jays handled division rival New York in four games during their divisional series, but the ALCS offered up a much different scenario. Battling tooth-and-nail, Toronto was able to shift the series back home, where they won the last two games to get to their first World Series in 32 years.
It took a balanced effort to get the Blue Jays to this point, and they were able to do so without the services of shortstop Bo Bichette, who is expected to return for this series, providing a massive boost to an offense that’s hit .296 already this postseason. They’ve scored 71 runs, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has accounted for six of the team’s 20 home playoff homers. The Jays’ first baseman has been relentless, hitting .442 2ith 12 RBIs and 11 runs this postseason. George Springer has also crossed the plate 11 times and has four key homers, with nine RBIs. Toronto hitters have struck out only 64 times in 11 games, and they’ve drawn 33 free passes.
On the pitching end, Toronto’s staff has a 4.36 ERA coming into this series with a 1.32 WHIP and a .233 opponents’ batting average. They’ve struck out 108 batters over 97 innings while allowing 44 walks. The starting staff is 5-2 with a 3.33 ERA in the postseason while the bullpen had added two wins, two saves and a 5.52 ERA over 45.2 innings. Louis Vardland has pitched in 10 of the 11 games, earning two holds and striking out 13 in 11 innings. The right-hander has a 3.27 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in the playoffs.
Starter spotlight
- Trey Yesavage made his MLB debut on September 15 and in his three regular-season starts, the Jays were 3-0.
- In the postseason, the 22-year-old is 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 15 innings.
- He last pitched in Game 6 of the ALCS, earning a win over allowing two runs, six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings.
- This will be the fifth straight start at home for Yesavage.
Dodgers vs. Blue Jays Picks
Money Line Picks for Dodgers vs. Blue Jays
- Blue Jays +135 (4 units)
These two teams met in Los Angeles in early August, and the Dodgers took two of three games. Blue Jays manager John Schneider has a long history of taking teams that include Guerrero and Bichette to the title, so this group shouldn’t be too fazed by the moment, despite it being 30-plus years since the team was here. Similarly, Yesavage has pitched with ice in his veins, seemingly unaltered by the moment at hand. That said, it will be a daunting task when he first sees the likes of Ohtani, Betters and Freddie Freeman in the first inning. Being at home should help calm the youngster’s nerves. While both teams have a decent amount of time between games, the Dodgers have been sidelined for a full week. I expect them to be slow to start with the bats and so long as the Jays can get on the board against Snell, or force him out early enough, their offense should do enough to sneak this one out.
Take the Blue Jays.
Over/Under Pick for Dodgers vs. Blue Jays
- Under 7.5 (5 units)
The three regular-season meetings between the teams saw an average of 8.3 runs per game scored. Los Angeles has not yet seen the young Yesavage, and there is only six games of him at the Major League level to study, so they are coming into this one with a slight disadvantage there. Snell pitched against the Jays in August and struck out ten while allowing just three hits and three walks in five innings. Both starters are dealing right now and have shown that the playoff atmosphere suits their efforts. The tension is going to be as high as it gets for both sides and with the downtime added in, I think this game belongs to the pitchers. The under is 5-3-2 in the last ten games between these two.
Take the under.
