Starting Pitchers

Miami is scheduled to start Ryan Gusto, who enters at 0-3 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 49.0 innings. Gusto has allowed 51 hits while recording 43 strikeouts against 14 walks and has surrendered six home runs. Cincinnati counters with Brady Singer, who is 5-11 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 119.2 innings. Singer has allowed 131 hits while striking out 100, walking 40 and giving up 22 home runs. Neither starter brings dominant numbers into Saturday, which could put more pressure on both offenses.

Marlins Have the Better Overall Statistical Profile

Miami enters Saturday at 62-60 overall and 24-35 on the road. The Marlins have won four of their last five games despite coming off a 13-1 loss to Pittsburgh. Before that setback, Miami had produced victories of 8-2 and 2-0 over Pittsburgh along with 12-3 and 7-0 wins over Los Angeles.

The Marlins are batting .250 with 1,010 hits, 535 runs and 124 home runs. Miami owns a .326 on-base percentage and .404 slugging percentage. Its pitching staff carries a 3.98 ERA and 1.25 WHIP while opponents are batting .231. The staff has issued 405 walks and recorded 1,021 strikeouts.

Miami holds meaningful advantages in batting average, runs, hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average. The major concern is the 24-35 road record, but the Marlins' overall numbers suggest they are the more complete team entering this matchup.

Reds Need Their Power to Make the Difference

Cincinnati enters at 58-62 overall and 29-31 at home. The Reds have gone 2-3 over their last five games, including a 9-8 victory over Chicago in their most recent contest. Their other win during this stretch also came against the White Sox, while Cincinnati suffered losses of 5-0, 7-1 and 8-2.

The Reds are batting .227 with 907 hits, 496 runs and 158 home runs. Cincinnati owns a .307 on-base percentage and .395 slugging percentage. The pitching staff has a 4.51 ERA and 1.41 WHIP while opponents are batting .246. Cincinnati has issued 498 walks and recorded 965 strikeouts.

Cincinnati's biggest offensive strength is power, as the Reds have hit 34 more home runs than Miami. The problem is that the Marlins have been better in nearly every other team category. Cincinnati's lower batting average and on-base percentage make it difficult to rely on sustained offense, while its pitching numbers also trail Miami.

Miami Marlins vs Cincinnati Reds Picks and Prediction

Pick: Miami Marlins Moneyline

Miami is the preferred side because the Marlins own the stronger overall statistical profile. They have the better batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, team ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average, and they have also won four of their last five games. The road record creates some hesitation, but Miami still offers the better combination of offense and pitching.

Pick: Over 8.5

Take the over if the total is set at 8.5. Both scheduled starters enter with ERAs above 4.60, and Cincinnati has allowed at least five runs in four of its last five games. Miami has also shown the ability to produce big offensive performances recently. With neither starting pitcher carrying dominant numbers, the Over is the preferred total play.
