Perez Toes the Rubber

Eury Perez will take the final game of this weekend's series against the Texas Rangers. Last week, he allowed one hit and struck out six without walking a batter over five scoreless innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Tuesday.

  • Perez likely had more to give, but a rain delay cut his start short at 71 pitches (46 strikes). It was still an improvement on his recent string of mediocre starts.
  • He had allowed a total of 29 runs (27 earned) over 31 innings across his last seven starts, posting a 7.84 ERA in that span.
  • The 22-year-old has shown flashes of potential this season, mainly in July, but he has also displayed plenty of inconsistency. He is at a 4.40 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 85:28 K:BB through 86 innings across 18 starts. This could be his final road start of the regular season.

At 74-80, the Marlins are out of postseason contention and merely playing the spoiler role in their remaining games. Entering play Saturday, they have won four in a row. Jakob Marsee and Brian Navaretto hit RBI doubles in the Game 1 win.

Rangers Postseason Hopes Dwindling

The Rangers are in desperation mode as they play the final game of this road series against the Marlins. Texas lost its fifth game in a row and is five games behind Houston for the American League's final wild card with eight games left. The Astros swept three games against the Rangers this week and own the tiebreaker for winning the season series. Houston is a game behind Seattle for the AL West lead after losing 4-0 to the Mariners at home on Friday.

  • Jacob Latz will take the mound in the final game of this series. He did not factor in the decision during Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Mets. He yielded one run on two hits and four walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings.
  • Latz worked through four scoreless frames before the Mets finally broke the 0-0 tie in the fifth inning. He hasn't completed six innings in an outing since June 24 as he's bounced around between the rotation, the bullpen, and Triple-A Round Rock in recent months.

Texas Rangers vs. Miami Marlins Game Pick

Money Line Pick for Rangers vs. Marlins

  • Miami Marlins ML (4 units)

The Marlins are playing their best baseball of the season, and although they are out of postseason contention, they can still deliver a crippling blow to the Rangers. Entering play Saturday, they have won nine of their last 12 games. Jacob Latz hasn't completed six innings in an outing since June 24 as he's bounced around between the rotation, the bullpen, and Triple-A Round Rock in recent months. Texas has lost five in a row and is in danger of being eliminated. I like the Marlins here to come out on top against a mediocre starter in Latz. Take Miami.

OVER/UNDER PICK for Rangers vs. Marlins

  • UNDER (4 units)

Texas had a spectacular August, and they propelled themselves into the wild-card situation with timely hitting and strong starting pitching. September has been a disaster. After posting a .770 team OPS in August and vaulting all the way up the AL West, they are hitting a measly .640 in September and have fallen five games behind the third and final wild card spot. They are 8-8 in September, and have been average all season. The playoffs look like they are falling out of reach. The total has gone over in six of Miami’s last seven games.
