By: Nathan Smith Published 09/19/2025, 11:00 AM ET

The 2025 MLB season is almost over, and while not every game has high stakes, there's still plenty on the line, especially in our Miami Marlins vs. Texas Rangers prediction.

The Miami Marlins (73-80) have taken some major steps forward thus far in 2025, and while their postseason hopes this season fell short, this is a team that appears to be building something very special.

On Friday, they take on the Texas Rangers (79-74), a team that has all the star power needed to push for a post-season spot in the American League, and if they are to make that one final push, they need to be near perfect down the stretch. Read on to see our Miami Marlins vs. Texas Rangers prediction.

Expected pitching matchup: RHP Janson Junk vs. RHP Tyler Mahle.

Can the Marlins end a promising season on a high note?

The Miami Marlins may be out of postseason contention, but that hasn't stopped them from being red-hot in recent times, as they've now won seven of their last eight games, putting them six games out of the final Wild Card spot in the National League. Offensively, the Marlins rank 16th in baseball in runs scored behind a very young lineup, and while the rotation has put together a 4.67 team ERA, ranking them 26th in the league, the future remains very bright for this young squad.

On the mound for Miami in this one will be intriguing right-hander Janson Junk, who has put together a 4.48 ERA on the season, with 104 hits allowed in 98.1 innings of work, as he appears to be a potential piece of the future for this team. Last time out for the Marlins was a dramatic win over the Colorado Rockies, with four RBI to Liam Hicks leading an offensive breakout as the team got 6.2 innings of three-run ball out of Sandy Alcantara as they came away winners 9-7.

Can the Rangers make a late Wild Card push?

While many have ruled the Texas Rangers out in 2025 due to their inconsistency, they're still alive in the Wild Card race, sitting four games back of the final spot in the American League on the back of a 47-28 record at home this season. This Rangers team is all about their pitching staff, as they currently rank first in baseball with a 3.45 ERA on the season, and with a lineup that ranks 18th in the league in runs scored thus far in 2025, they've given themselves a shot to pull off something special late in the season.

Texas will turn to veteran right-hander Tyler Mahle for this series opener, with the 30-year-old putting up a fantastic 2.34 ERA through 14 appearances this season, and with just 60 hits allowed in 77.0 innings, he's proving he can still be very valuable at this level. Last time out for the Rangers was a tough loss to the Houston Astros, with the lineup managing just six hits on the night as Jacob DeGrom gave up five earned runs over 5.0 innings, with the team falling short to their state-rival 5-2.

Miami Marlins vs. Texas Rangers pick

Money line pick for Marlins vs. Rangers

  • Texas -145 (4 units)

On paper, the Texas Rangers are the much better team in this rivalry, and they've shown it as of late, going 7-3 in their last 10 head-to-head matchups dating back to 2017, including a 4-0 record in games played at home in that time.

Also, the Rangers rank first in baseball in team ERA, and against an inconsistent but promising offense, they've got just enough firepower to take them down, so look for the Rangers to pick up a key game one win in this matchup.

Over/Under pick for Marlins vs. Rangers

  • Over 8 (4 units)

Despite the Rangers' incredible pitching staff, this is a matchup that always results in plenty of runs, with the over being 6-4 in their last 10 head-to-head encounters, with the winning team scoring six or more runs in nine of their last 10 meetings.

For the Marlins, the over sits at 8-2 in their last 10 overall games, with over six runs scored per game in that stretch, and for the Rangers, the over comes in at 5-5 in their past 10, with 20 total runs scored in their last four games played at home.

Keep it simple, take the over.
