The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals meet for the second game of their weekend series at Nationals Park in Washington, District of Columbia, on Saturday, August 29, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM ET, with coverage available on MLB.TV. Miami enters at 68-67 overall and 26-40 on the road, while Washington is 64-73 overall and 30-38 at home. The betting market has this matchup essentially even, with Miami listed at -109 and Washington at -111 on the moneyline. The total is 7.5 runs, with the Over priced at -114 and the Under at -105. Washington took Friday's series opener 9-2 and has now won two straight games. For more baseball predictions throughout the season, check out our free MLB picks.

Starting Pitchers

Sandy Alcantara gets the start for Miami and enters with a 13-8 record, 3.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 183.2 innings. Alcantara has allowed 167 hits while striking out 137 and walking 49, with 18 home runs surrendered. Washington counters with Cade Cavalli, who is 12-5 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 148.2 innings. Cavalli has allowed 137 hits while recording an impressive 169 strikeouts against only 43 walks, with 17 home runs allowed. There isn't much separating these starters statistically. Alcantara holds the slight WHIP advantage and has worked more innings, while Cavalli owns the lower ERA and significantly higher strikeout total.

Marlins Look to Bounce Back After Rough Opener

Miami remains above .500 at 68-67, but its recent form has been uneven. The Marlins are just 2-3 over their last five games and were handled 9-2 by Washington in Friday's series opener. Before that loss, Miami shut out Boston 4-0 but had dropped the previous two games of that series by scores of 7-3 in 11 innings and 4-2. The Marlins have now been held to three runs or fewer in three of their last four games.

Miami has produced a .249 batting average, 582 runs, 1,109 hits and 134 home runs this season. The Marlins carry a .326 on-base percentage and .399 slugging percentage. Those numbers show an offense capable of putting runners aboard, but the power production has been considerably lower than Washington's. Miami has hit 54 fewer home runs and scored 122 fewer runs than the Nationals.

The Marlins have compensated with much better pitching. Miami owns a 3.88 team ERA and 1.25 WHIP, with opponents batting only .230. Those numbers are substantially stronger than Washington's 4.69 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and .257 opponent batting average. Miami's overall record hasn't translated particularly well away from home, however, as the Marlins have gone just 26-40 on the road.

Nationals Bring the Better Offense Into Saturday

Washington improved to 64-73 with Friday's convincing 9-2 victory and has now won consecutive games. The Nationals are 3-2 over their last five, with their victories coming by scores of 13-3, 7-1 and 9-2. Their two losses during that stretch were much different, as Washington was beaten 13-1 before losing 3-1. That inconsistency has been a problem, but the Nationals have demonstrated considerably more offensive upside than Miami this season.

Washington is batting .248 with 704 runs, 1,155 hits and 188 home runs. Its .325 on-base percentage is almost identical to Miami's .326 mark, but the Nationals hold a significant advantage with a .431 slugging percentage compared with Miami's .399. Washington has scored nearly one additional run per game over the course of the season and has shown substantially greater home-run power.

The concern with Washington continues to be run prevention. The Nationals' 4.69 ERA and 1.39 WHIP are both significantly worse than Miami's marks, and opponents are batting .257 against Washington pitching. Saturday could be different because the Nationals have one of their better starting pitching situations. Their starter enters with a 3.21 ERA and has struck out 169 over 148.2 innings, giving Washington a chance to neutralize Miami's biggest statistical advantage.

Miami Marlins vs Washington Nationals Picks and Prediction

Pick: Washington Nationals ML (-111)

This is close to a true pick'em, and Washington -111 is the preferred side. Miami has the superior pitching staff statistically, but Washington has a favorable combination of current form, home field and starting pitching. The Nationals have won three of their last five and scored 29 runs in those three victories, including nine against Miami on Friday. They also own major advantages in season-long runs scored, home runs and slugging percentage. Miami's poor 26-40 road record is another concern. With Washington's starter carrying a 3.21 ERA and 169 strikeouts into the matchup, the Nationals have enough pitching to support their superior offense and make the short home price worth playing.

Pick: Under 7.5 (-105)

Friday's opener produced 11 runs, but Saturday presents a substantially different pitching matchup. Under 7.5 at -105 is the better total play with both starters carrying ERAs below 3.40. Miami's starter owns a 3.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 183.2 innings, while Washington's starter has a 3.21 ERA with 169 strikeouts in 148.2 innings. Miami has also scored three runs or fewer in three of its last four games. Washington has demonstrated significant offensive upside, but the Marlins' 3.88 team ERA and .230 opponent batting average make another nine-run performance difficult to project. With two quality starters on the mound, the Under gets the edge.

Final Picks: Washington Nationals ML (-111) and Under 7.5 (-105).
