Brewers on their heels
The Brewers saw homefield advantage evaporate quickly in the NLCS as their bats remained quiet. After starting the playoffs with 16 runs in two games, they’ve scored eight over their last five, with just two runs scored in their two games this series.
In this series, Milwaukee has managed to produce a combined five hits and four walks while striking out 18 times. In the playoffs, the team is hitting .206 with 16 extra-base hits and 24 runs. They’ve managed to strike out 52 times, and they’ve earned 22 free passes. No player has more than one hit in this series. Jackson Chourio hit a leadoff solo home run in Game 2. The outfield hit safely in five of seven playoff games and he’s driven in eight runs, double that of the next closest hitter on the club.
The Brewers’ pitching staff is a lot of patchwork at this point, once they’ve used up Freddy Peralta for a start. They have a 3.39 team ERA in seven postseason games with a 1.31 WHIP and .221 opponents’ batting average. Starting pitching has provided the club with only 19.2 innings and they have a 6.86 ERA, while the bullpen has picked up two wins to go with a 1.74 ERA over 41.1 innings. Chad Patrick appeared in five games out of the bullpen, allowing just a run while striking out six over five innings.

Pitching spotlight
- Jose Quintana is in line to get some bulk innings in this or the next game as he’s pitching just once this postseason.
- Went 1-0 with 3.75 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this season.
- Is 4-2 with a 2.32 ERA in 15 career games against Los Angeles.
- Opponents have hit .241 against him this season with 18 home runs and 50 walks.
Dodgers cruising in postseason
The Dodgers are slicing through the postseason like a warm knife on butter. They went into Milwaukee and stifled them with some outstanding starting pitching, including a complete game effort from Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Tuesday. Now they return home needing only two wins to book themselves a second straight World Series trip.
The Los Angeles offense is hitting .272 with seven runs this series and over the course of eight postseason games, they have a .262 batting average with 10 home runs and 38 runs scored. They’ve drawn 30 walks, struck out 68 times, and are 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts. Kike Hernandez has once again become a Dodger playoff hero, hitting .379 with four doubles, four RBIs, and seven runs. Teoscar Hernandez connected for his fourth home run of the postseason on Tuesday night, a solo shot. He’s driven in 10 and scored five times.
Following the 1-2 punch of Blake Snell and Yamamoto to open the series, the Dodgers' staff had a 2.80 ERA and 1.05 WHIP this postseason as opponents hit just .179 against them. Starting pitching is 6-1 with a 1.54 ERA and 63 Ks in 52.2 innings. The bullpen has chipped in with a win, three saves and a 5.91 ERA. Roki Sasaki is responsible for two of the saves and has allowed just one earned run over six innings of work in relief. Both Alex Vesia and Blake Treinen have made five appearances, and each has allowed two earned runs.
Starter spotlight
- Tyler Glasnow faced Milwaukee twice in the regular season and went 0-1 with a 0.82 ERA.
- Lifetime, the Dodger starter is 0-3 with a 4.55 ERA in nine games versus the Brewers.
- Has one postseason start and one relief appearance and allowing a combined four hits and five walks while striking out 10 batters in 7.2 innings.
- Dating back to the regular season, has thrown 12.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
- Opponents hit .177 against him this season with 10 home runs and 43 walks.
Brewers vs. Dodgers Picks
Moneyline Pick for Brewers vs. Dodgers
- Dodgers -1.5 (+108) (5 units)
Before the start of this series, the Brewers won six-of-six regular-season games between the clubs. The Dodgers won when it mattered, and they’ve done so on the heels of two outstanding starting pitching performances. They have just the guy on the hill to keep that momentum rolling as well. Glasnow, despite not earning a win, did really well versus Milwaukee in the regular season and those were his first two after returning from right shoulder inflammation. The big right-hander has been dealing down the stretch and hasn’t allowed a run this postseason. The way the Milwaukee bats are going, this is going to be a monster challenge for them. Then there is the matter of their own pitching, which manager Pat Murphy even called “depleted.” He also stated that everyone, but Game 1 starter Freddy Peralta, would be available, for better or worse. The Dodgers have the Brewers just where they want them and they have set up their pitching rotation to shut them down with little to no resistance.
Take the Dodgers with the run line, since they are rolling right now.
Over/Under Pick for Brewers vs. Dodgers
- Under 7.5 (5 units)
The teams averaged a combined 4.5 runs per game over the first two games of this series. The Brewers’ offense is down bad and up against it once again, facing Glasnow. Dave Roberts has gotten comfortable in allowing his starters to keep the ball if they are feeling it and that’s been a big difference maker. As has having Sasaki on the backend, especially after their bullpen looked shaky earlier in the playoffs. The Dodgers' offense has done enough to back their pitching. No one player is specifically “hot” by any means and though I expect them to carry the bulk of the load, they’ve scored five runs or less in six straight. Milwaukee scored one run or less in three of their last four efforts.
Take the under.
