By: Kim Smith Published 09/04/2026, 12:40 AM ET

The Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox meet Friday, September 4, 2026, at Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, with first pitch scheduled for 7:40 PM ET. Minnesota enters the game at 67-73 overall and 29-39 on the road, while Chicago is 73-66 overall with an impressive 41-27 record at home. The White Sox currently lead the American League Central, with Minnesota sitting 6.5 games behind them. Chicago also owns a 6-4 advantage in the season series, while ESPN Analytics gives the White Sox a 53.4% win probability compared with 46.6% for Minnesota. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Check out our free MLB picks throughout the baseball season.

Starting Pitchers

Zebby Matthews is scheduled to start for Minnesota and enters at 9-8 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 112 innings. He has allowed 109 hits and 19 home runs while recording 93 strikeouts against 32 walks. Erick Fedde counters for Chicago with a 7-8 record, 4.16 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 123.1 innings. He has surrendered 124 hits and 22 home runs with 88 strikeouts and 45 walks. Neither starter has dominant season-long numbers, although Chicago enters with the slightly better ERA on the mound while Minnesota's starter owns the lower WHIP.

Twins Bring the Better Batting Average

Minnesota enters Friday at 67-73 overall and has struggled to establish itself away from home, going 29-39 on the road. The Twins are 3-2 over their last five games, although their three-game winning streak ended with an 11-6 loss in 12 innings against Detroit. Minnesota scored 32 runs across those three victories, including consecutive wins by scores of 11-1 and 15-2, so the offense has demonstrated considerable upside recently.

The Twins are batting .246 as a team with 658 runs, 1,165 hits and 165 home runs. They have posted a .320 on-base percentage and .409 slugging percentage, giving Minnesota small advantages over Chicago in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging. The Twins have scored only two fewer runs despite playing one more game, making these offenses much closer statistically than the difference in the standings might suggest.

Pitching has been Minnesota's biggest season-long weakness. The Twins carry a 4.63 team ERA and 1.38 WHIP while opponents are batting .252 against them. Those numbers are noticeably worse than Chicago's pitching marks, and Minnesota's road record adds another concern. The Twins can score enough to remain competitive, but their ability to prevent runs has not matched the White Sox over the course of the season.

White Sox Lean on Home-Field Advantage

Chicago enters Friday at 73-66 and remains in first place in the AL Central despite going just 2-3 over its last five games. The White Sox return home following a road series in Houston in which they lost two of the first three completed games, including a 2-0 defeat in their most recent contest. Returning to Rate Field could be important because Chicago has gone 41-27 at home compared with Minnesota's 29-39 road record.

The White Sox are batting .237 with 660 runs, 1,105 hits and 181 home runs while carrying a .319 on-base percentage and .406 slugging percentage. Chicago's batting average trails Minnesota's by nine points, but the White Sox have compensated with more power. Their 181 home runs are 16 more than the Twins have hit, and Chicago has scored two more runs overall.

Chicago has also been the better pitching team. The White Sox own a 4.13 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .240 batting average. Those marks compare favorably with Minnesota's 4.63 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and .252 opponent average. Combine that pitching advantage with Chicago's strong home record and 6-4 edge in the season series, and the White Sox have several meaningful advantages entering Friday night's matchup.

Minnesota Twins vs Chicago White Sox Picks and Prediction

Pick: Chicago White Sox Moneyline

The Chicago White Sox Moneyline is the preferred side. Minnesota has been swinging the bat well recently, but Chicago owns the stronger overall profile with the better record, substantially better home performance and superior season-long pitching numbers. The White Sox are 41-27 at Rate Field while Minnesota is only 29-39 on the road, and Chicago has already won six of the first ten meetings between these AL Central rivals. The starting pitching matchup is relatively close, but the White Sox have the better team ERA and opponent batting average behind their starter. Chicago is the moneyline pick at home.

Pick: Over 8.5

The Over 8.5 is my preferred target number for the total. Neither starting pitcher has been dominant, with both carrying ERAs above 4.00, and Minnesota's pitching staff enters with a 4.63 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Chicago has also hit 181 home runs, while Minnesota has produced 165 and recently scored 32 runs across a three-game winning streak. The Twins' last three games alone produced 17, 17 and 17 combined runs, illustrating how quickly their recent contests have opened up. Chicago's pitching numbers create some resistance, but the combination of power and vulnerable starting pitching makes Over 8.5 the preferred total if that number is available.

Final Picks: Chicago White Sox Moneyline and Over 8.5
