Twins punch way out of slump
In the wake of a six-game losing streak, the Twins broke off back-to-back wins after taking the series opener on Monday, 12-3. The offense has been decent over the past few weeks, scoring five runs or more in eight of their last 15 games and they hit 265 in that stretch. The team ranks 11th in hitting this season with a .239 average through 144 games. They’ve scored 612 runs, hit 10 home runs and stolen 90 bases. Luke Keaschall had a three-hit night on Monday, raising his batting average to .329 in 37 games since his callup. The rookie second baseman hit safely in eight straight games prior to Tuesday night. Royce Lewis slugged two home runs on Monday, giving him 12 on the year. The outfielder had five multi-hit efforts over his last 10 games.
The Minnesota pitching staff has been one of the worst in the league over the past half-month. In their last 13 games, they posted a 6.08 ERA, the second-worst mark in the American League. This season, their 4.55 team ERA ranks 12th in the league and their 1.33 WHIP is 11th. They have struck out 1,209 batters and opponents are hitting .259 against them. Twins’ starters had a 40-44 record with a 4.51 ERA, and the bullpen chipped in with 24 wins, 27 saves and a 4.59 ERA over 547.1 innings.

Angels get slugged out of their own building
The Angels went into Tuesday night having gone 1-4 over their last five games, with their last three losses coming by at least six runs each. In those three efforts, the pitching staff yielded a combined 39 runs. They’ve been the only pitching staff worse than the Twins’ over the last half month, with a 6.51 ERA over 13 games. On the year, Los Angeles has a 4.84 team ERA and a 1.44 WHIP, both the worst marks in the American League. Their 1,130 strikeouts were second second-fewest, and opponents were hitting .261 against them. Starting pitching for the club was 8-52 with a 4.81 ERA and their relievers had a league-worst 4.87 ERA to go with 39 wins and 34 saves.
Starter spotlight
- Jose Soriano makes his 30th start of the season and the team is 14-15 when he pitches.
- Has his shortest outing of the season last Friday, lasting 2.1 innings against the Athletics, earning a loss after allowing eight runs, five hits and five walks.
- The right-hander allowed one home run over his last four starts.
- Opponents are hitting .247 against him with 73 walks.
- In three games against the Twins, Soriano is 0-2 with an 8.22 ERA in his career.
The Angels' bats have been following their pitchers’ lead as they’ve been dead last in hitting over the past half month with a .191 team batting average. They are in the bottom half of the league in terms of run production, with their 611 runs this season tied for 11th in the American League. Mike Trout accounted for one of the team’s five hits no Monday and drew two walks in the loss. The All-Star outfielder is hitting just .230 this season but he has reached base safely in nine straight games. His 81 walks this season are the third most in the A.L. Jo Adell is fourth in the league with 35 home runs after hitting five in his last seven games.
Twins vs. Angels Picks
Spread Pick for Twins vs. Angels
- Angels -142 (5 units)
The Twins have been dominating the head-to-head between these teams, going 9-1 over the last ten meetings, prior to Tuesday night. The Angels could be in danger of dropping another one here, given the recent inconsistencies of Soriano. In his last six starts, the Angels’ hurler had three games where he allowed at least five earned runs and the other three, he didn’t allow any. His most recent effort came at home and against a mediocre Athletics offense. The Twins don’t have a strong offense by any means but they do have some punch to them, noted on Monday night. While I do believe Minnesota’s offense can do enough, their greater issue is Bradley, who has not looked good since coming off of the injured list in last August. He did fare well against the Padres, two starts ago, but also allowed three walks in that effort. If he can stay in command of his pitches, this Angels lineup is about as weak as it gets right now, so he should be able to slice them up.
Take the Twins.
Over/Under Pick for Twins vs. Angels
- Over 8.5 (5 units)
Despite this matchup featuring the two least productive offenses in the American League over the past half month, they combined for 15 runs on Monday night. This pitching matchup is ripe for another run-fest. Soriano gave up eight in his most recent outing and Bradley allowed four runs last time out. Things don’t get any better on either side once the bullpens come into play either. In terms of scoring, Minnesota has put up at least five runs in three of their last five games, a stretch where it scored a combined 28 runs. The Angels have been able to put up four runs in three of their last four and four of their last six games. The over is 6-3-1 in the last ten games between the two teams.
Take the over.
