Twins look for strong finish
The Minnesota Twins (68-89) will not be returning to the postseason in 2025. Minnesota was outplayed all year by AL Central pace-setters Detroit and Cleveland and sits back in fourth place in the division, which it last won in 2023. Any chance of a Wild Card spot was extinguished by a six-game losing streak to start September; the Twins are 6-15 this month, though they have come back in this final week with two wins, including Tuesday's 4-1 defeat of Texas to get this current series going. Zebby Matthews came through strong with seven one-run innings and six K's to mark the best start of his young career.
Minnesota is yet to confirm who will start on the mound in Thursday's series finale. The team has Parker Messick, Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober all available on regular or extended rest, the latter two both starting games in September 25's double-header vs Cleveland. The Twins have struggled on the mound in 2025, putting up a 4.65 team ERA, which ranks 26th in MLB. That number has shot up to 5.85 in September, with only the Angels and Rockies giving up more runs this month.

Rangers out of contention
The Texas Rangers (79-78) are resigned to missing the playoffs for the second straight season since winning the World Series in 2023. Tuesday's loss to Minnesota, which extended this current losing streak to eight games, sealed Texas' fate, leaving the team 6.0 games behind Detroit in the final AL Wild Card spot with only five games left to play. The Rangers are eliminated despite pitching better than anyone else in pro baseball this year with a team ERA of 3.46. Their issues have come almost exclusively at the plate, where they rank 26th in MLB with a .687 OPS.
Tyler Mahle will take the mound for Texas on Thursday. Mahle was on track for a career-best season until he suffered a shoulder injury in June, which caused him to miss three months. He returned to action on September 19 and pitched 4.2 scoreless innings against the Marlins, striking out six. The right-hander has gone 6-3 in 15 starts with a 2.20 ERA and 62 K's in 82.1 innings pitched.
Twins vs. Rangers pick
Spread Pick for Twins vs. Rangers
- Rangers ML (4 units)
In a matchup between two struggling teams, the presence of Mahle gives Texas a big edge at home. The pitcher looked great in his first MLB outing since June last time out and he will be looking to end the season with another impressive showing against an underwhelming Twins lineup, which has hit just .196 in its last five games. Minnesota has struggled all year away from Target Field, going 30-46 on the road in 2025.
Take the Rangers on the runline.
Over/under Pick for Twins vs. Rangers
- Under (5 units)
Get on the under for this game. Everyone has seen what Mahle can do now that he is back and healthy, and while the Twins are yet to announce their starter they have three strong options available. If Messick gets the nod, as seems likely given his extra rest, he has an extra advantage: Texas has hit lefties poorly all season with a team OPS of only .657 (26th in MLB). Minnesota is 34-39-1 on the over as the away team this year. The Rangers have an O/U record of 29-49-1 at home. They are hitting .227 at home, the third-worst mark in MLB.
Take the under.
