Mets Favored to Make the Postseason
The expectations have been high for the New York Mets for several seasons now, but they haven’t been able to get over the hump and make a World Series push. The Mets are once again in contention entering the home stretch, as they’re 74-64 and possess the final wild card spot in the National League. New York has a 4.0-game cushion over second-place Cincinnati, and the Mets are currently priced at -600 to make the playoffs. In terms of recent form, the Mets dropped three out of four games over the weekend to the Marlins (L: 7-4, W: 19-9, L: 11-8, L: 5-1), but they bounced back with a 10-8 victory over the Tigers on Monday.
It was Juan Soto who powered the way in Monday’s 10-8 victory, going 2-for-3 with a home run, six RBI, and two runs scored. Ryan Stanek (0.2 IP, 0 ER) picked up the win in relief, while Edwin Diaz (1.1 IP, 0 ER) slammed the door and logged his 25th save.
- Nolan McLean gets the nod for Tuesday’s contest, and the organization’s number one pitching prospect has been lights out since joining the Major League club.
- In three starts (20.1 IP), the right-hander has gone 3-0 with a 0.89 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP.
- Most recently, McLean faced the Phillies and threw 8.0 shutout innings, conceding only four hits.
- He picked up the win in the 6-0 victory.

Tigers Dominating the American League
Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers are looking to build on their ALDS run from last season, and this group has been playing lights out in 2025. At this juncture, the Tigers sit at 80-59 and own the best record in the American League. From here, Detroit is priced as high as +900 to win the World Series, which is the fourth-shortest price in the market and the best odds in the A.L. The Tigers are in the midst of an ugly 2-6 run, and they dropped Monday’s series opener to the Mets (10-8).
Charlie Morton (3.2 IP, 6 ER) wasn’t sharp in his start, but the loss ultimately fell on Drew Sommers (1.0 IP, 3 ER) in relief. Offensively, Jahmai Jones paved the way, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.
- Sawyer Gipson-Long will oppose McLean on Tuesday, and the 27-year-old is gearing up to make his seventh appearance and third start this season.
- In 25.0 innings pitched, the right-hander has gone 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.
- Gipson-Long last pitched on August 13th against the White Sox, and he held them scoreless over 2.0 relief innings.
- He picked up a hold in the 1-0 victory.
Full-Game Side Bet
This is a heavyweight series and a great test for both teams, but when the dust settles on Tuesday night, I think it’ll be the Mets who emerge. With how dominant Nolan McLean (0.89 ERA) has looked recently, I’m fine with laying the -130 vig with New York.
Furthermore, the Tigers simply haven’t been in great form recently, going just 2-4 SU in their last six games. They’ll turn to a Sawyer Gipson-Long, and he is both inexperienced (25.0 IP this season) and underwhelming (4.32 ERA). He’ll have to deal with a Mets squad that ranks first in wOBA (.406) and fourth in ISO (.223) over the last seven days. With McLean on the bump and New York’s offense buzzing, I think it’s best to ride with the Mets.
Prediction: New York Mets Moneyline (-130)
Full-Game Total Bet
An additional reason as to why I like the Mets, and why I’ll also be on the under, is due to Detroit’s offense being a wreck recently. Over the last seven days, the Tigers are just 24th in wOBA (.288) and 28th in ISO (.111). Now they’ll have to deal with a rookie hurler in McLean, who has been unreal to start his MLB career. In three starts (20.1 IP), the right-hander owns a 0.89 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP.
We also have a pair of top-half bullpens in this game. Heading into Tuesday, the Mets are 14th in relief ERA (3.94), while the Tigers are 15th (3.95). Factor in that the wind will be blowing in from dead center field at around 6.4 MPH, and I think it’s best to play the under at this slightly elevated total of 8.5 runs.
Prediction: Under 8.5 (-115)
