Perez Takes the Mound
In what will be his final appearance of the regular season, Eury Perez will toe the rubber in the second game of this series. He did not factor into the decision last Sunday against the Rangers, allowing two hits and a walk across four scoreless innings. He struck out nine in an excellent showing.
- Perez struck out nine of the 16 batters he faced, and retired 10 straight batters at one point, showing dominant stuff once again, but left the game after 88 pitches.
- The right-hander's September has been a tale of two stories, as he was hammered for 10 runs across his first two starts of the month but has since bounced back with nine straight scoreless innings over his last two.
- The 22-year-old right-hander has allowed three runs or fewer with at least six strikeouts in three consecutive starts. Perez has a 4.20 ERA and 94/29 K/BB ratio in 90 innings this year. He faced the Mets on August 29th and failed to make it out of the first inning. He allowed five runs and two walks. He hopes to bounce back from that game in what will be his final showing of the regular season.
Mets in Desperation Mode
New York has yet to officially announce a starter for the second game of this weekend's series against the Marlins. The Mets have little margin for error here against Miami, where they are 2-1 this year. Only a sweep of the Marlins will guarantee New York a playoff berth, barring outside help.

- After going 11-17 in August and entering play Friday with a 9-13 mark in September, New York has seen what should have been an easy appearance into the postseason turn into a nail-biter.
- The Mets have just a one-game lead on the Reds (81-78) in the chase for the third NL wild card, and Cincinnati holds the tiebreaker.
- The Arizona Diamondbacks (80-79) are just two games behind the Mets, whose 37-53 record since June 13 is the fifth worst in the majors. "We've got to play better," New York manager Carlos Mendoza said. "We're better than that."
If the Mets fail to make the postseason, it will be a huge disappointment, considering they have the second-highest payroll in MLB. They have lost 12 of their last 18 games overall, and eight of their last nine facing National League East foes.
New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins Game Pick
- New York Mets ML (5 Units)
Entering action Friday afternoon, the Mets are clinging to the third and final wild card spot. They are facing Eury Perez here, a pitcher they obliterated just a month ago. The right-hander's month has been a tale of two halves, as he was hammered for 10 runs across his first two starts of the month but has since bounced back with nine straight scoreless innings over his last two. At the end of August, he gave up five runs and two walks in the first inning to the Mets, and I like New York to pull it together here and hang on to the final wild card spot with one game remaining on Sunday. Take New York to win.
OVER/UNDER PICK Mets vs. Marlins
- OVER (4 Units)
The Marlins found themselves in the thick of the wild-card race a month ago, but they are out of a spot here in the final weekend of the season. Eury Perez was lifted last week after 88 pitches, and even if he has a strong showing here, I cannot see the Marlins straining him with a high pitch count. Miamiβs bullpen is on the weaker side, and they enter this game with a 4.34 bullpen ERA, in the bottom third in the MLB. The Pen has also given up 87 home runs this season. Take the over.
