Starting Pitchers

New York is scheduled to start Gerrit Cole, who enters at 8-9 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 115.1 innings. Cole has allowed 108 hits and 20 home runs while recording 117 strikeouts against only 22 walks. Arizona counters with Zac Gallen, who is 3-9 with a 6.22 ERA and 1.57 WHIP through 101.1 innings. Gallen has surrendered 126 hits and 19 home runs while striking out 62 and walking 33. This is one of the clearest starting-pitching advantages on Friday's slate. Cole owns the substantially better ERA and WHIP, has 55 more strikeouts despite only 14 additional innings, and has issued 11 fewer walks. Gallen's combination of a 6.22 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 126 hits allowed creates a difficult matchup against a New York lineup that has produced considerable home-run power this season.

New York Brings Power and Pitching to Phoenix

New York enters Friday at 88-64 and sits 4.5 games out of first place in the American League East. The Yankees are coming off a difficult 5-4 loss in 13 innings at Minnesota, but they won the previous three games by scores of 8-1, 8-3 and 2-0. That gives New York a 3-2 record across its last five completed games. The Yankees have also performed extremely well away from home, going 46-32 on the road, which reduces the concern of beginning this series at Chase Field.

The Yankees are batting .235 with 1,185 hits, 697 runs and 209 home runs. Their .312 on-base percentage is relatively modest, but their .409 slugging percentage reflects an offense capable of changing games with one swing. New York's greater advantage has been its pitching staff, which carries an excellent 3.19 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. Opponents are batting only .223 against the Yankees, while the staff has recorded 1,363 strikeouts against 457 walks. New York is also 28-26 in day games, although Friday's contest is scheduled for the evening.

The combination of power and run prevention gives New York an attractive statistical profile in this matchup. The Yankees have hit 209 home runs compared with Arizona's 154, a difference of 55 long balls. They have also scored 19 more runs despite Arizona owning the better team batting average and on-base percentage. Most importantly, New York has a 0.90-run advantage in team ERA and has held opponents to a batting average 25 points lower than Arizona. That pitching gap becomes especially significant with the Yankees also holding a substantial advantage in Friday's scheduled starting matchup.

Arizona Needs Its Offense to Overcome the Pitching Gap

Arizona enters the series at 80-73 and remains above .500 despite a difficult recent stretch. The Diamondbacks have lost four of their last five completed games, including consecutive defeats against Miami by scores of 4-3 and 4-2 in 11 innings. Their only victory during that five-game stretch was an 8-7 win, while their other losses came 7-6 and 6-2. Arizona has therefore been competitive in several of those defeats, with three of its four losses during the stretch coming by two runs or fewer.

The Diamondbacks are batting .244 with 1,251 hits, 678 runs and 154 home runs. Arizona owns a .316 on-base percentage and .397 slugging percentage. Its pitching staff has recorded a 4.09 ERA and 1.28 WHIP while opponents are batting .248. Arizona has accumulated 1,073 strikeouts against 456 walks. The Diamondbacks have also performed well at Chase Field with a 43-35 home record, giving them a legitimate home-field strength entering this series.

Arizona's best path to keeping this matchup close is turning its contact advantage into sustained offensive pressure. The Diamondbacks own the better batting average and have collected 66 more hits than New York, but that has not translated into more runs. Arizona also gives away a substantial amount of power, with its 154 home runs well behind New York's 209. The larger concern is preventing runs. Arizona's 4.09 team ERA, .248 opponent batting average and Friday starting-pitching matchup all point toward New York having opportunities to generate offense even if Arizona is able to put runners on base against the Yankees.

New York Yankees vs Arizona Diamondbacks Picks and Prediction

Pick: New York Yankees Moneyline

The Yankees have several significant statistical advantages that make them the preferred side. New York is 46-32 on the road, while Arizona's 43-35 home record shows the Diamondbacks are certainly capable at Chase Field. The difference comes on the mound. New York owns a 3.19 team ERA compared with Arizona's 4.09, while its scheduled starter carries a 3.67 ERA and 1.13 WHIP against a 6.22 ERA and 1.57 WHIP for Arizona's starter. New York also brings substantially more home-run power into the matchup. Arizona's ability to make contact and its solid home record keep the Diamondbacks competitive, but the combination of starting pitching, overall run prevention and power makes the Yankees the stronger moneyline position if the eventual price remains playable.

Pick: Over 8.5 or Lower

The pitching matchup is heavily tilted toward New York, but the Over has appeal at 8.5 or lower because Arizona's starting numbers create considerable scoring potential for the Yankees. The Diamondbacks' scheduled starter has allowed 126 hits in 101.1 innings with a 6.22 ERA and 1.57 WHIP, while New York has already produced 209 home runs and 697 runs this season. Arizona has also shown enough offense to contribute, scoring at least six runs in two of its last five and owning a .244 team batting average. The Yankees may be capable of doing much of the work themselves if they capitalize on their starting-pitching advantage, making the Over attractive at 8.5 while a move to 9.5 would significantly reduce the value.

Final Picks: New York Yankees Moneyline and Over 8.5 or Lower
