The New York Yankees and Washington Nationals meet on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Nationals Park in Washington, District of Columbia. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. ET, with television coverage on MLB.TV. New York enters the matchup with a 52-42 overall record and a 29-22 mark on the road, while Washington is 48-47 overall and 20-29 at home. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. ESPN Analytics gives the Nationals a slight 53.1% chance of winning compared to 46.9% for the Yankees. Be sure to check out our free MLB picks.

Starting Pitchers

New York is expected to send Will Warren to the mound. The right-hander is 7-4 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP over 93.1 innings. He has allowed 97 hits and 13 home runs while striking out 94 and walking 31. Washington is scheduled to counter with Cade Cavalli, who enters with a 5-4 record, a 3.88 ERA, and a 1.38 WHIP in 92.2 innings. Cavalli has allowed 97 hits and eight home runs while recording 105 strikeouts against 31 walks. The two starters have nearly identical workloads, but Washington’s starter owns the lower ERA, fewer home runs allowed, and a higher strikeout total.

New York Tries to Keep Its Momentum Going

The Yankees arrive with a 52-42 overall record and have been solid away from home, posting a 29-22 road mark. New York has gone 3-2 over its last five games. The Yankees recently defeated Washington 5-3 after earning a 12-4 victory over Tampa Bay. They also picked up a 5-1 win during that series, while their two losses came by scores of 6-4 and 3-0. The recent stretch has allowed New York to continue building a winning record heading into Sunday’s contest.

As a team, the Yankees are batting .237 with 453 runs, 738 hits, and 139 home runs. They own a .317 on-base percentage and a .423 slugging percentage. On the mound, New York has compiled a 3.40 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP while holding opponents to a .228 batting average. The pitching staff has also recorded 818 strikeouts while issuing 278 walks. The Yankees are 18-15 in day games.

The biggest strength for New York is its pitching staff. The Yankees own a significantly lower ERA and WHIP than Washington while also limiting opponents to a much lower batting average. Even though New York’s batting average trails Washington’s, its pitching numbers have helped produce a winning record both overall and on the road.

Washington Looks to Respond at Home

Washington enters Sunday’s matchup with a 48-47 overall record and a 20-29 record at Nationals Park. The Nationals have gone 2-3 over their last five games. They most recently lost to New York 5-3 after splitting a four-game stretch against Houston. During that run, Washington earned wins of 8-2 and 12-11 while suffering losses of 6-3 and 11-5. The Nationals have shown they can score runs, but consistency has been harder to find.

Washington is batting .251 with 511 runs, 817 hits, and 134 home runs. The Nationals carry a .325 on-base percentage and a .435 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff owns a 4.76 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP while allowing opponents to hit .260. Washington has struck out 755 hitters while walking 333. The Nationals are 21-22 in day games.

Washington’s biggest advantage comes from its offense. The Nationals lead the Yankees in batting average, runs scored, hits, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. They have also hit 134 home runs, only five fewer than New York. The challenge will be matching that offensive production with enough pitching, as the Nationals have allowed more runs over the course of the season than the Yankees.

New York Yankees vs Washington Nationals Picks and Prediction

New York Yankees vs Washington Nationals Pick

  • Pick: New York Yankees Moneyline

New York is my moneyline selection despite the slight matchup predictor edge favoring Washington. The Yankees have the better overall record, the stronger road record, and have already won the opening game of this series by a 5-3 score. New York also owns a substantial advantage in team ERA, WHIP, opponent batting average, and strikeouts. While Washington’s offense has produced more runs this season, I believe the Yankees’ pitching profile provides the stronger overall foundation in this matchup.

New York Yankees vs Washington Nationals Total Pick

  • Pick: Take the over if the total is set at 8.5

I would take the over if the total is set at 8.5. Washington averages 511 runs on the season and has scored at least eight runs in two of its last five games. New York has hit 139 home runs and has produced 12, 5, and 5 runs in three of its last four victories. Although the Yankees have the stronger pitching staff overall, both starting pitchers carry ERAs above 3.80, and I think both offenses have enough production to push this game beyond that number.

Final Score Prediction: New York Yankees 6 – Washington Nationals 4

This prediction was written before the completion of game play on Saturday.
