Starting Pitchers

Philadelphia is set to start Zack Wheeler, who has been outstanding this season with a 9-1 record, a 2.28 ERA, and a 0.91 WHIP across 87.0 innings. The right-hander has allowed just 59 hits while striking out 98 and walking only 20. He has surrendered 10 home runs. Detroit will counter with Tarik Skubal, who enters with a 5-4 record, a 3.06 ERA, and a 0.95 WHIP over 70.2 innings. The left-hander has allowed 57 hits while recording 84 strikeouts against only 10 walks, also giving up 10 home runs. Both clubs feature quality starting pitching, with Wheeler holding the advantage in ERA and wins while Skubal has issued fewer walks.

Philadelphia Aims to Respond After Friday’s Defeat

The Phillies enter Sunday’s game with a 52-43 overall record and a solid 27-22 mark away from home. Philadelphia has gone 2-3 over its last five games. The Phillies most recently lost to Detroit 10-2 after splitting a three-game stretch against Cincinnati. During that series they earned victories by scores of 1-0 and 4-1 while falling 11-5. Their fifth game during this stretch was a 15-1 loss at Kansas City.

Philadelphia is batting .236 with 415 runs, 754 hits, and 124 home runs. The Phillies own a .303 on-base percentage and a .401 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has posted a 4.30 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP while holding opponents to a .256 batting average. Philadelphia has recorded 928 strikeouts while issuing 276 walks. The Phillies are 15-18 in day games.

The Phillies’ biggest strength is their power. Philadelphia has hit 124 home runs, which is 10 more than Detroit, while also recording an impressive 928 strikeouts on the pitching side. The challenge has been limiting opposing offenses consistently, as the Phillies have allowed double-digit runs in two of their last five contests despite maintaining a winning overall record.

Detroit Continues to Protect Home Field

Detroit comes into the series finale with a 44-50 overall record and an impressive 27-21 home record. The Tigers have won each of their last five games. They most recently defeated Philadelphia 10-2 after sweeping a four-game series against the Athletics by scores of 4-1, 6-1, 6-2, and a 6-3 win over the Rangers. That winning streak has given Detroit considerable momentum entering Sunday’s matchup.

The Tigers are batting .236 with 405 runs, 738 hits, and 114 home runs. They have produced a .315 on-base percentage and a .401 slugging percentage. Detroit’s pitching staff owns a 3.64 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP while allowing opponents to hit .233. The Tigers have recorded 774 strikeouts while issuing 277 walks. They are 19-16 in day games.

Detroit’s greatest strength has been its pitching efficiency. The Tigers own a significantly lower ERA and WHIP than Philadelphia while also limiting opponents to a .233 batting average. Although Detroit has scored 10 fewer runs than the Phillies this season, its ability to prevent runs has helped the club build a strong 27-21 home record and a five-game winning streak.

Philadelphia Phillies vs Detroit Tigers Picks and Prediction

Philadelphia Phillies vs Detroit Tigers Pick

  • Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline

Philadelphia is my moneyline selection despite Detroit’s recent winning streak. The Phillies have the better overall record, a winning road record, and they also send the stronger statistical starting pitcher to the mound. Wheeler owns a 2.28 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP, giving Philadelphia a meaningful edge in the pitching matchup. While Detroit has been excellent at home and won Friday’s opener 10-2, I believe the combination of Philadelphia’s overall record and starting pitching gives the visitors the edge in this matchup.

Philadelphia Phillies vs Detroit Tigers Total Pick

  • Pick: Take the under if the total is set at 7.5

I would take the under if the total is set at 7.5. Both starting pitchers enter with ERAs below 3.10, and each has kept opposing hitters in check throughout the season. Detroit’s team ERA sits at 3.64, while Philadelphia’s scheduled starter has posted a 2.28 ERA. Even though Friday’s opener featured 12 total runs, I expect the starting pitching to play a much larger role in this matchup, making the under my preferred play if the total is set at 7.5.

Final Score Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies 4 – Detroit Tigers 3

This prediction was written before the completion of game play on Saturday.
