Philadelphia Phillies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Pick and Prediction September 17th, 2025
Two teams in prime position for this year's playoffs will go head-to-head when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday at 10:10 p.m. EST in Dodger Stadium. Check out our Philadelphia Phillies vs Los Angeles Dodgers pick and prediction here!
Philadelphia has the division wrapped up with a 90-61 record, 12 games ahead of the New York Mets. However, they are looking for home-field advantage all throughout the playoffs. For that, they need to catch up to the Brewers, who are two games ahead of them. Philadelphia is 8-2 in their last ten and will be facing their greatest competition to achieve that goal. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are in a fierce battle for supremacy in the NL West division. They have an 84-66 record with a 2.5 game lead over the Padres. They are 6-4 in their last ten and need every win they can get. The Dodgers are a -150 money line while the total is set at an even eight runs. Can the Phillies earn an upset win on the road?

Phillies Not Satisfied
Philadelphia gained some ground on the Brewers with a clutch 6-5 win over the Dodgers in extra innings. Kyle Schwarber did his usual thing with a solo shot and Weston Wilson added a homer with two RBI on the day. Bryce Harper also added a solo homer while J.T. Realmuto and Bryston Stott each had an RBI. Ranger Suarez produced a quality start with three runs given up on six innings pitched, striking out five and walking two.
Philadelphia made only one splash move during the deadline, but bolstering depth was the main focus for the club at this time. Brewer Hicklin was acquired from Detroit for cash to start things off, but the major move was getting Jhoan Duran from the Twins. Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel were sent to Minnesota to complete the deal. Harrison Bader was also acquired from the Twins for Geremy Villoria and Hendry Mendez. The Tigers also had a second deal with the Phillies, this time trading Matt Manning for Joseuth Quinonez. With the injury to Wheeler, the Phillies will need their new acquisitions to step up as best as they can to make up for that loss.
Jesus Lazardo will look to keep Philadelphia in the win column as the starter here. Overall, he has a 14-6 record through 30 starts and 169.2 innings pitched. He has a 4.03 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP to go with an even 200 strikeouts this season, very close to his career averages. Lazardo started on fire with a 1.44 ERA in April, but regressed with an ERA over 5.00 through May, June, and July. His August was a bit better with a 3.12 ERA and so far in September, he has done well with a 3.86 ERA. This will be his toughest test in a whil,e though, as the Dodgers are desperate for a win. Jose Alvarado, Alec Bohm, and Trea Turner highlight the injured list for Philadelphia in this one.

Dodgers Doing it Again?
Los Angeles fell in extra innings to the Phillies by a score of 6-5. Mookie Betts finally captured his vintage form with a homer and three RBI while Max Muncy and Andy Pages added a solo homer each. However, it was not enough on the offensive end. Pages was the only one with multiple hits, and he had three. While Anthony Banda only recorded one out to start the game, Emmet Sheehan went 5.2 innings after that and gave up only one run. Unfortunately, the bullpen behind him didn't do enough to hold onto the lead.
The Dodgers only made a couple of minor moves before the final day of the trade deadline, sending Noah Davis to the Twins and trading Steward Berroa to the Brewers for cash. However, on the final day, Los Angeles acquired Paul Gervase, Adam Serwinowski, and Ben Rortvedt from the Rays in exchange for Hunter Feduccia. Alex Call was acquired from Washington for Sean Paul Linan and Eriq Swan. Dustin May was traded to the Red Sox for James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard. Then the Twins traded Brock Stewart to L.A. for James Outman. The Dodgers didn't need to make a big splash to be the favorite to repeat as champions, but we'll see if what they have is enough.
The Dodgers went out and got Blake Snell this past offseason for games like these. He will be starting in one of the more important games of the season in 2025. In an injury-plagued year, Snell has a 4-4 record with a 2.79 ERA through nine starts. He has only thrown 48.1 innings this season, but still has 55 strikeouts and a 1.39 WHIP. Aside from a couple of starts before April 3rd, Snell started his season in August and had a solid month with a 2.54 ERA. His September has been less impressive with a 4.09 ERA, but the main thing L.A. needs is his health for their playoff run. Will Smith and Brock Stewart are the only players on the injured list who aren't on the sixty-day IL.
Phillies vs Dodgers Pick
Money Line Pick for Phillies vs Dodgers
- Dodgers Money Line (-150)
Yes, the Phillies might be the better overall team right now based on their record, but I have more confidence in Snell to deliver when L.A. needs it most on Wednesday. Philadelphia is only a tad better than .500 on the road while the Dodgers are 48-26 at home this year. The lineup, including Ohtani, Freeman, and Betts at the top, is a lineup I do not want to bet against, particularly when they need to win this one with the Padres catching up to them. This also sets them up for a potential playoff matchup, meaning whoever wins this will have the confidence and bragging rights heading into a possible playoff clash in the NLDS or NLCS between the two. Dodger Stadium will be loud and ready to back their team.
Over/Under Pick for Phillies vs Dodgers
- Under 8
Normally, I would take the over with these stacked lineups, but I feel more confident in the pitchers that each team is sending out to start the game. Lazardo has given up a combined three earned runs in his last 19.1 innings pitched against the Dodgers and Blake Snell is a rock-solid performer when healthy. Both pitchers have under a 3.25 ERA in their last five games and both teams have reached the under in the majority of their games this season. This will be the last chance for both teams to showcase their superiority and considering both squads have something to play for here, I expect there will be extra consideration to limit the number of mistakes made. Pitching and defense will be key here.
