By: Kim Smith Published 09/19/2026, 12:25 AM ET

The Philadelphia Phillies visit the New York Mets at Citi Field in Queens, New York, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM ET with coverage on ESPN Unlimited and MLB.TV. Philadelphia enters at 85-68 overall and 44-34 on the road, while New York is 69-84 overall and 34-44 at home. The Phillies are second in the NL East, four games behind Atlanta, while the Mets sit fifth at 20 games back. Philadelphia has won two straight completed games, including a 3-0 victory over New York on September 17, while the Mets have dropped five consecutive games. The Phillies lead the current series 1-0 entering Friday's game, which had not been completed when this preview was prepared. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

Philadelphia had not announced its starting pitcher for Saturday at the time this preview was prepared. New York is scheduled to start Christian Scott, who enters at 4-5 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 105.1 innings. Scott has allowed 87 hits while recording 127 strikeouts against 46 walks and surrendering 12 home runs. Those numbers give New York a potentially solid starting point, particularly considering the relatively low hit total and strong strikeout production. However, Philadelphia's undecided starter creates considerable uncertainty when evaluating both the side and total, making it important to check the confirmed pitching matchup before placing a wager.

Philadelphia Finding Wins Behind Improved Run Prevention

Philadelphia enters Saturday at 85-68 overall with a strong 44-34 road record. The Phillies are 3-2 over their last five completed games and have won their last two, shutting out Washington 3-0 before doing the same to New York on September 17. Their other victory during the five-game stretch was a 9-4 win at Atlanta. Philadelphia's two losses were 6-3 against Washington and 12-2 against Atlanta, creating a volatile recent sample but one that has improved considerably over the last two completed games.

The Phillies are batting .242 with 1,238 hits, 684 runs and 177 home runs this season. They have produced a .312 on-base percentage and .398 slugging percentage. Philadelphia's pitching staff owns a 3.96 ERA and 1.28 WHIP while accumulating 1,484 strikeouts against 459 walks. Opposing hitters have batted .246 against the Phillies. Philadelphia holds modest advantages over New York in batting average, runs scored, hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, ERA and WHIP.

The most encouraging development for Philadelphia has been its recent run prevention. The Phillies have posted consecutive shutouts and allowed only 22 runs across their last five completed games despite 18 of those runs coming in their two losses. In their three victories during that stretch, they surrendered only four total runs. The unknown starting pitcher prevents us from assuming that level of run prevention will automatically continue Saturday, but Philadelphia's overall statistical profile and 44 road victories provide reasons to trust the Phillies more than their opponent.

New York Searching for an Answer During Five-Game Slide

New York enters this matchup at 69-84 overall and 34-44 at Citi Field. The Mets have lost five consecutive games, with the offense scoring only seven total runs during that stretch. New York lost 2-0 to its crosstown rival before dropping three straight against Baltimore by scores of 2-1, 7-5 in 11 innings and 7-1. The skid then continued with a 3-0 home loss to Philadelphia. The Mets have been shut out twice during the losing streak and held to one run in two additional games.

The Mets are batting .237 with 1,224 hits, 650 runs and 190 home runs. New York has a .308 on-base percentage and .393 slugging percentage, while its pitching staff carries a 4.16 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. The Mets have issued 523 walks while recording 1,372 strikeouts, and opponents are batting .241 against them. New York does hold the power advantage with 190 home runs compared with Philadelphia's 177, but Philadelphia has scored 34 more runs despite hitting fewer homers.

New York's immediate concern is clearly offensive production. Seven runs across five games works out to only 1.4 runs per contest, and that is difficult to overcome regardless of how well the pitching staff performs. The scheduled starter gives the Mets a chance to stay competitive Saturday, especially with Philadelphia's starter still undecided, but New York needs substantially more from its offense. Until that happens, backing the Mets requires trusting a lineup that has repeatedly failed to provide enough run support during the current losing streak.

Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Mets Picks and Prediction

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline

Philadelphia is my preferred side despite the uncertainty surrounding its starting pitcher. The Phillies have the better overall record, better road record than New York's home mark and advantages in most of the supplied team offensive and pitching categories. More importantly, the Mets enter on a five-game losing streak during which they've scored just seven runs. Philadelphia has won two straight completed games by identical 3-0 scores and already shut out New York in the first completed game of this series. New York's scheduled starter is capable of keeping this close, so the eventual price matters, but Philadelphia is the side I would look toward once the pitching matchup and moneyline are finalized.

Pick: Under 8.5 or Higher

The Under 8.5 or higher is the preferred total target, although Philadelphia's undecided starter makes this a wager that should be confirmed closer to first pitch. New York's last five completed games have produced combined totals of 2, 3, 12, 8 and 3 runs, with three staying comfortably below an 8.5 threshold. The Mets themselves have averaged only 1.4 runs per game during their five-game losing streak, while Philadelphia enters off consecutive shutouts. New York's scheduled starter owns a 3.76 ERA and has allowed only 87 hits across 105.1 innings. At 8.5, the recent offensive problems on the New York side make the Under attractive, but I would avoid chasing the number downward if the market opens significantly lower.

Final Picks: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline and Under 8.5 or Higher
