Starting Pitchers

San Diego had not officially announced its starting pitcher at the time of writing. Brandon Pfaadt is scheduled to start for Arizona. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP through 72 innings. He has allowed 72 hits, 21 walks and eight home runs while recording 49 strikeouts. Pfaadt gives Arizona an established option for the series opener, while the uncertainty surrounding San Diego’s pitching plan creates an additional variable.

San Diego Carries Consecutive Victories Into the Desert

San Diego has won four of its previous five completed games. The Padres defeated Colorado 8-7 and 3-1 before suffering a 4-1 loss to San Francisco. They responded by shutting out the Giants 7-0 and then earned a dramatic 6-5 victory on Saturday. That productive stretch lifted San Diego three games above .500 and improved the club’s record to 7-3 across its past 10 games.

The Padres are batting .236 with a .312 on-base percentage and a .385 slugging percentage. San Diego has recorded 860 hits, 120 home runs and 467 runs while stealing 112 bases. The Padres own a noticeable advantage in home runs and stolen bases, giving them multiple ways to create offense despite ranking in the lower portion of the league in batting average and overall hit production.

San Diego’s pitching staff carries a 4.15 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .247. The Padres have collected 907 strikeouts, substantially more than Arizona’s staff, but they have also issued 387 walks. Their ability to limit free baserunners will be especially important against a Diamondbacks offense that has been among baseball’s most productive units since the All-Star break.

Arizona Returns Home With Its Offense Surging

Arizona has won four consecutive games and seven of its past 10. The Diamondbacks produced their most recent victory by defeating Cleveland 12-8 on Saturday, scoring seven runs in the seventh inning to overturn an early deficit. Arizona has been particularly productive since the break, scoring 106 runs across its first 18 games while compiling a 13-5 record during that stretch.

The Diamondbacks are batting .243 with a .315 on-base percentage and a .395 slugging percentage. Arizona has accumulated 906 hits, 107 home runs and 508 runs. Although the Diamondbacks have hit 13 fewer homers than San Diego, they have scored 41 more runs and hold advantages in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and total hits.

Arizona owns a 4.20 team ERA with a 1.30 WHIP. The Diamondbacks have allowed opponents to bat .254 while recording 752 strikeouts and issuing 323 walks. Their staff does not produce as many strikeouts as San Diego, but it has allowed fewer walks and carries the slightly better WHIP. Pfaadt must provide stability because Arizona’s offense has occasionally needed to overcome substantial deficits during its recent winning streak.

San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks Picks and Prediction

Moneyline Pick:

  • Arizona Diamondbacks

I am taking Arizona on the moneyline. San Diego enters in good form and holds the better team ERA, but the Diamondbacks have won four consecutive games while producing one of baseball’s strongest post-break offensive stretches. Arizona also owns the better overall record and a 31-22 mark at Chase Field.

The pitching situation strengthens the case for the home team. Pfaadt is 5-1 and provides Arizona with a confirmed starter, while San Diego had not formally settled its pitching plan. The Diamondbacks have also scored 41 more runs this season despite hitting fewer home runs. At approximately -130, Arizona is the more dependable side.

Total Pick:

  • Over 9.0

I will take the over if the total is set at 9.0. Arizona has been scoring at an elevated rate since the All-Star break and enters after producing 12 runs against Cleveland. The Diamondbacks’ 4.28 team ERA and .254 opponent batting average also give San Diego a realistic opportunity to contribute several runs.

San Diego has scored six or more runs in three of its previous five games, while Arizona’s recent offensive surge makes it difficult to trust either pitching staff to control the entire contest. Pfaadt’s 4.00 ERA is respectable but not dominant, and the uncertainty surrounding the Padres’ starter adds further support to a higher-scoring position. My projected result is Arizona 6, San Diego 4.

This game was completed prior to play on Sunday.
