Starting Pitchers

San Diego is scheduled to start Michael King, who enters at 8-9 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through 156 innings. King has allowed 122 hits while recording 135 strikeouts against 60 walks and has surrendered 18 home runs. Cincinnati counters with Brady Singer, who is 5-12 with a 4.72 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through 137.1 innings. Singer has allowed 150 hits while striking out 112 against 45 walks and has surrendered 26 home runs. San Diego owns the clear statistical edge in this starting matchup, with the lower ERA, lower WHIP and fewer hits and home runs allowed.

Padres Look to Stop a Two-Game Slide

San Diego enters Monday at 72-64 and remains in the National League playoff picture despite losing its last two games. The Padres are 1-4 over their last five completed contests, with their lone victory during that stretch coming by a 3-0 score. Their recent losses have come by scores of 7-6, 9-4, 1-0 and 3-2 in 12 innings.

The Padres are batting .237 as a team with 579 runs, 1,061 hits and 150 home runs. They own a .315 on-base percentage and .387 slugging percentage. San Diego's offense has not been dominant, but it has produced 16 more runs than Cincinnati despite hitting 29 fewer home runs.

The pitching staff has been the stronger part of San Diego's profile. The Padres own a 3.94 team ERA and 1.29 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .242 batting average. They have issued 460 walks while recording 1,096 strikeouts.

That pitching advantage is important in this matchup. San Diego's season ERA is 0.73 runs lower than Cincinnati's, and the Padres also hold a sizable advantage in WHIP. With a stronger starter scheduled to take the mound, San Diego has a clear path to controlling the early portion of this game.

Cincinnati Returns Home After an Uneven Road Stretch

Cincinnati comes into Monday at 64-72 and sits fifth in the National League Central. The Reds are 2-3 over their last five completed games and return home after a road stretch in which their results varied dramatically. Cincinnati scored 10 runs in consecutive victories but was held to one run or fewer in two of its other three games.

The Reds are batting .228 with 563 runs, 1,030 hits and 179 home runs. Their .307 on-base percentage trails San Diego's mark, although Cincinnati does own a slightly better .394 slugging percentage due in large part to its greater home-run production.

Pitching remains the larger concern. Cincinnati owns a 4.67 ERA and 1.43 WHIP while allowing opposing hitters to bat .252. The staff has issued 558 walks and recorded 1,090 strikeouts. Compared with San Diego, the Reds have been less effective at limiting both hits and baserunners.

The most recent result was especially ugly, with Cincinnati allowing 17 runs in a loss. While one game should not define the handicap, the Reds have now allowed at least eight runs in two of their last three contests. That defensive volatility becomes dangerous against a San Diego team with the better starting pitching matchup.

San Diego Padres vs Cincinnati Reds Picks and Prediction

Pick: San Diego Padres Moneyline

San Diego is the preferred side because of the significant edge on the mound. The Padres' scheduled starter enters with a 3.23 ERA and 1.17 WHIP compared with Cincinnati's 4.72 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. San Diego also owns the better team ERA and WHIP over the full season and has already won two of the first three meetings between these teams. The Padres' recent record is concerning, but the underlying pitching matchup provides enough reason to expect a rebound. With no betting market posted yet, take San Diego on the moneyline once the line becomes available.

Pick: Under 9

The total has not yet been released, but 9 is the preferred target number. San Diego owns a 3.94 team ERA and sends its stronger starter to the mound, while the Padres have been involved in several low-scoring recent games, including finals of 3-0, 1-0 and 3-2. Cincinnati's pitching creates some Over risk, especially after its recent struggles, but San Diego's offense has also been inconsistent and is batting only .237 for the season. If the market opens at 9 or higher, there should be enough room to back a lower-scoring result. Take the Under if the total is set at 9 or higher.
