Starting Pitchers

Casey Mize is scheduled to start for San Diego and enters at 5-8 with a 3.45 ERA and 1.10 WHIP across 109.2 innings. He has allowed 94 hits while recording 96 strikeouts against only 27 walks and has surrendered 11 home runs. Cincinnati counters with Brandon Williamson, who is 2-3 with a 6.11 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 28 innings. He has allowed 26 hits with 19 strikeouts, 20 walks and four home runs. The starting-pitching matchup gives San Diego a substantial advantage, particularly in run prevention, WHIP and command.

Padres Have the Edge on the Mound

San Diego enters Wednesday at 73-65 overall and 32-37 away from home. The Padres are second in the NL West and 9.5 games behind the division-leading Dodgers. They have gone 2-3 over their last five games, but their latest result was an encouraging 5-0 victory over Cincinnati. That win ended a three-game losing streak in which San Diego surrendered 21 runs against Tampa Bay. The Padres have now recorded shutouts in both of their victories during this five-game stretch.

The Padres are batting .238 with 588 runs, 1,082 hits and 150 home runs. They carry a .315 on-base percentage and .386 slugging percentage. San Diego has the better batting average and on-base percentage in this matchup, although Cincinnati has produced considerably more home-run power. The Padres have scored only nine runs over their last four games, making offensive consistency the biggest question surrounding them entering the series finale.

San Diego's stronger case comes from its pitching. The Padres own a 3.91 team ERA and 1.29 WHIP while holding opponents to a .241 batting average. They have issued 469 walks and recorded 1,117 strikeouts. Those numbers compare favorably with a Cincinnati staff carrying a 4.67 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and .252 opponent batting average. Combined with the clear advantage in Wednesday's starting matchup, pitching gives San Diego a strong opportunity to take control of this game.

Reds Need Their Power to Break Through

Cincinnati enters at 65-73 overall with an identical 32-37 record at home. The Reds are fifth in the NL Central and 20 games behind Milwaukee. They are 3-2 over their last five games, but the most recent result was a 5-0 loss to San Diego. Cincinnati had previously scored at least seven runs in three consecutive games, beating Chicago 7-5 and 10-8 along with a 10-9 victory over San Francisco.

The Reds are batting only .228, but their offense has generated 570 runs and 183 home runs. Cincinnati owns a .307 on-base percentage and .395 slugging percentage. The 183 home runs are 33 more than San Diego despite the Reds having fewer hits and a lower batting average. That power is Cincinnati's clearest offensive path to an upset, but the shutout in the series opener showed the risk when the long ball is not producing runs.

Pitching remains the biggest problem for Cincinnati. The Reds enter with a 4.67 ERA and 1.43 WHIP while opponents are batting .252 against them. They have also issued 559 walks, 90 more than San Diego. That lack of command becomes particularly important Wednesday because Cincinnati's scheduled starter has issued 20 walks in only 28 innings. If the Reds continue providing free baserunners, San Diego should have considerably more scoring opportunities than its recent offensive production might suggest.

San Diego Padres vs Cincinnati Reds Picks and Prediction

Pick: San Diego Padres Moneyline

The San Diego Padres Moneyline is the preferred side. Cincinnati has the greater home-run potential, but San Diego owns the advantages that appear more sustainable in this matchup. The Padres have the better team ERA, WHIP, opponent batting average, batting average and on-base percentage, and Wednesday's starting-pitching matchup strongly favors San Diego. The Padres' scheduled starter owns a 3.45 ERA and 1.10 WHIP compared with a 6.11 ERA and 1.64 WHIP for Cincinnati's scheduled starter. San Diego also opened the series with a 5-0 shutout, and ESPN Analytics gives the Padres a 59.5% win probability. Take the San Diego Padres Moneyline.

Pick: Under 9.0

The Under 9.0 is the preferred total if the number opens around nine runs. Cincinnati has enough power to make an over dangerous, but San Diego enters with a 3.91 team ERA and sends out a starter with a 3.45 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and only 27 walks over 109.2 innings. Cincinnati was shut out in the series opener, while San Diego has scored only nine runs over its last four games. The Reds' pitching problems create some risk, but San Diego's recent offensive production and its advantage on the mound make the under the stronger position at this number. Take the Under if the total is set at 9.0.
