Starting Pitchers

San Diego will start Michael King, who enters at 7-8 with a 3.37 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 136.1 innings. King has allowed 105 hits and 55 walks while recording 120 strikeouts and surrendering 15 home runs. Cleveland counters with Gavin Williams, who is 11-6 with a 3.55 ERA and excellent 1.04 WHIP through 144.2 innings. Williams has allowed 109 hits and 41 walks while striking out 185 and giving up 22 home runs. King owns the slightly better ERA, while Williams has the stronger WHIP and a major advantage in strikeout production.

Padres Enter Cleveland on a Five-Game Winning Streak

San Diego has won five consecutive games entering Friday's series opener. The Padres swept their last three games against Milwaukee by scores of 4-3 in 11 innings, 11-2 and 3-2 after closing their previous series against Houston with victories of 7-2 and 3-2. San Diego is eight games above .500 overall, although its 28-31 road record remains an area of concern.

The Padres are batting .238 with a .314 on-base percentage and .388 slugging percentage. San Diego has scored 522 runs on 956 hits while producing 134 home runs. The pitching staff owns a 4.10 ERA and 1.32 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .244.

San Diego's strongest advantage is its offensive production. The Padres have scored 39 more runs than Cleveland while recording 20 more hits and 17 more home runs. The pitching numbers are less favorable, however, as San Diego trails Cleveland in ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average.

Guardians Look to Build on Their Latest Victory

Cleveland enters Friday having won two of its last five games. The Guardians are coming off a 6-4 victory at Detroit after losing the previous three games by scores of 6-4, 5-3 and 6-3. They opened the five-game stretch with an 8-2 win over Chicago. Cleveland returns home with a 28-31 record at Progressive Field.

The Guardians are batting .233 with a .314 on-base percentage and .370 slugging percentage. Cleveland has accumulated 936 hits, 117 home runs and 483 runs. The pitching staff has been more effective, posting a 3.84 ERA and 1.27 WHIP while holding opponents to a .239 batting average.

Cleveland's biggest advantage is its pitching profile. The Guardians have the better team ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average, and their starter brings elite strikeout production into Friday's game. The challenge is an offense that trails San Diego in batting average, runs, hits, home runs and slugging percentage.

San Diego Padres vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Prediction

Pick: San Diego Padres Moneyline

San Diego gets the slight edge in what looks like one of Friday's more competitive matchups. The starting pitching comparison is relatively even, with each side holding advantages in different categories, but the Padres bring the stronger offense and far better recent form. San Diego has won five straight while Cleveland has dropped three of its last four. The Padres' losing road record keeps this from being a high-confidence selection, but their current momentum and superior offensive production make them the preferred side.

Pick: Under 8.0

With no confirmed total available, take the Under if the total is set at 8.0 or higher. Both starters enter with ERAs below 3.60, and Cleveland's starter owns a 1.04 WHIP with 185 strikeouts. The Guardians have also posted a 3.84 team ERA, while neither offense has produced an especially strong season batting average. San Diego's recent scoring surge adds some risk, but the starting matchup supports a lower-scoring game at eight runs or better.
