Ray Making 31st Start
Robbie Ray will take the mound for his 31st appearance in the second game of this series. He took the loss against the Dodgers in a start last Sunday, surrendering five runs on six hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out five in the contest.
- Ray opened with a strong showing, striking out Shohei Ohtani on a 96 mph fastball to begin a clean first inning, but he quickly found himself struggling against an elite Los Angeles lineup.
- The southpaw issued four walks and needed 98 pitches (58 strikes) to get through just four frames, with his night ending in the fifth after giving up a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts, followed by back-to-back hits from Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman.
- Over his last seven outings, the 33-year-old has struggled to a 6.06 ERA and 28:12 K:BB across 35.2 innings.
- On the season, he has a consistent 3.50 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 177 total frames. He has a difficult road showing here in a rematch against the Dodgers. Entering play Thursday afternoon, the Giants are two games back of the third and final wild card spot.

Kershaw Takes the Hill
In the second game of this divisional series with the Giants, the Dodgers will trot out veteran lefty Clayton Kershaw.
- He struggled in a no-decision against the Giants on Saturday night, serving up four runs on five hits over three innings.
- Kershaw also issued four walks in the ballgame while striking out a pair of Giants. All of the damage that was done against him came during a four-run surge in the opening inning.
- The 37-year-old southpaw settled in afterwards, but it still took him 67 pitches (39 strikes) to labor through three innings. According to yahoo.com, he got six whiffs on the night, putting together a CSW of 27 percent. Kershaw now holds a 10-2 record, 3.53 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 71/30 K/BB ratio over 102 innings through his first 20 starts.
Entering action Thursday afternoon, the Dodgers hold a two-game lead over the San Diego Padres for first place in the National League West. They have been dominant at home this season, recording a 49-28 record. But, they have been average on the road, with a 36-39 record away from Dodger Stadium.
Giants vs. Dodgers Game Pick
Spread Pick for Giants vs. Dodgers
- San Francisco Giants ML (4 units)
This will be the second time in a week Robbie Ray will face the Dodgers. Ray struggled last week, giving up five runs on six hits and four walks. Although he struggled with his command, the fastball was still working well. He fired six innings of three-run ball on July 13th against the Dodgers, so Ray has it in him to navigate this tough lineup. I expect a bounce-back performance here for a Giants team desperately trying to sneak into the postseason. The Giants have not had much success against LA lately, but I like them to gut out a win with Ray on the hill. Take the Giants.
Over/Under Pick for Giants vs. Dodgers
- UNDER (5 units)
The Giants and Dodgers are quite familiar with one another, and although Kershaw and Ray have logged a ton of innings this year, they get a respective rematch here after a bout last week. Both pitchers struggled with their command, issuing far too many walks last weekend. I expect a cleaner performance from two excellent pitchers here. The Giants have been average facing lefty starters, holding an OPS 90 points lower than when facing righties. I expect a low-scoring game here and a Giants win.
