Starting Pitchers

Carson Whisenhunt is expected to start for San Francisco against a Texas team that has not yet announced who will start. Whisenhunt enters with a 2-2 record and a 6.63 ERA. The lack of an announced starter means that Texas may end up relying on the bullpen for the starting pitching in this game.

San Francisco Attempts to Build Some Momentum

San Francisco entered Tuesday after snapping a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over Texas in Monday’s series opener. The Giants had dropped three consecutive games in San Diego before responding with a much better all-around performance in Arlington. San Francisco scored three runs during the second and third innings combined on Monday and received six scoreless innings from its starter. The Giants produced only six hits but took advantage of five Texas errors to secure the victory.

The Giants are averaging approximately 4.2 runs per game while batting .252 as a team. San Francisco has recorded 128 home runs and 51 stolen bases, giving the offense a reasonably balanced statistical profile. The pitching staff carries a 4.36 ERA, while opposing hitters are batting .248. Those numbers help explain why the Giants have struggled to establish consistency despite possessing an offense capable of producing competitive run totals.

San Francisco’s primary concern Wednesday is its starting pitching. Whisenhunt’s 6.63 ERA creates a difficult matchup against a Texas lineup playing at home. The Giants cannot count on the Rangers committing another five errors, meaning they may need significantly more offensive production than they generated Monday. San Francisco has enough contact hitting to create scoring opportunities, but it must convert those chances before Texas reaches the weaker portions of the visiting pitching staff.

Texas Searches for an End to Its Slide

Texas entered Tuesday on a six-game losing streak after dropping Monday’s opener 5-1. The Rangers had been swept in a three-game series at Houston immediately before returning home, scoring only nine runs during those three defeats. Monday brought another frustrating result. Texas collected seven hits but managed only one run, while its five defensive errors repeatedly gave San Francisco additional opportunities. The Rangers have now fallen below .500 after entering the recent stretch in a much stronger position.

The Rangers are averaging 4.1 runs per game with a .244 team batting average. Texas has recorded 130 home runs and 57 stolen bases, narrowly exceeding San Francisco in both categories. The Rangers carry a 4.34 ERA, and opponents are batting .248 against their pitching staff. These teams have produced remarkably similar season-long statistics, although Texas has converted its numbers into seven more victories.

The most important factor for Texas is playing a cleaner game behind whomever the Rangers use as the starter. The Rangers’ starter could end up owning the better record and ERA in Wednesday’s matchup, but that advantage can disappear quickly if the defense continues giving San Francisco extra outs. Texas also needs its offense to take advantage of Whisenhunt’s recent difficulties. The Rangers have lost six straight, but this starting matchup provides a realistic opportunity to stop the slide.

San Francisco Giants vs Texas Rangers Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline

I am taking Texas on the moneyline. The Rangers have been struggling badly and cannot afford another defensive performance resembling Monday’s five-error showing. However, the lack of a starter announcement provides Texas with the unclear starting-pitching potential advantage. While Whisenhunt’s 2-2 record and 6.63 ERA shows some potential issues. San Francisco remains capable of winning the series finale, but I expect Texas to play a cleaner game and finally capitalize on a favorable pitching matchup at home.

  • Pick: Over 8.5

I also favor Over 8.5 runs if that becomes the posted total. Whisenhunt struggled considerably in his most recent appearance and carries a 6.63 ERA into this contest. Both teams average slightly more than four runs per game, and their pitching staffs possess nearly identical ERAs above 4.30. I expect improved scoring from Texas and enough production from San Francisco to push the game over the target number.

This game preview was completed prior to game play on Tuesday.
