mariners vs. rays prediction

On Tuesday night, the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays meet in the final game of a three-game series at Tropicana Field, and we will set you up with a Mariners vs. Rays prediction to go along with Free MLB Picks. George Kirby will pitch for the Mariners while Adrian Houser takes the mound for Tampa. Read on for a prediction on the score and a game breakdown.

Kirby Takes the Mound

George Kirby will pitch the final game of this series with the Rays. He did not factor into the decision in last Friday's 5-4 loss to the Guardians, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks with six strikeouts over seven innings.

  • The 27-year-old right-hander allowed two runs, with both coming on solo home runs. Kyle Manzardo hit a solo home run off Kirby in the sixth inning, and Nolan Jones followed suit in the seventh inning.
  • He breezed through five scoreless innings before giving up the solo homers in the sixth and seventh, throwing 64 of 98 pitches for strikes.
  • According to Yahoo.com, he generated 10 whiffs. It was the 27-year-old's sixth time posting a quality start with two earned runs or fewer in his last seven outings, the lone wrinkle being a seven-run blowup Aug. 17. Kirby was in line for the win before Andres Munoz blew the save.
  • He will take a 3.94 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 103:26 K:BB across 102.2 innings into a road matchup with the Rays. Heading into the second game of this series, Seattle has a 1.5-game lead on the third and final wild card spot.

Houser Making 17th Start

The Rays will trot out right-hander Adrian Houser for the final game of this early-week series against the Mariners. He came away with a no-decision in Friday's 4-1 win over the Nationals, allowing one run on six hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out four in the game.

  • Houser struggled to miss bats and put hitters away last week. That pushed up his pitch count and forced him from this game before he could qualify for the win.
  • According to Yahoo.com, he only threw 36% of his pitches in the zone, and the Nationals hitters were ready to take many of them. Houser tossed an inefficient 86 pitches (51 strikes) before getting pulled with Tampa Bay up 3-1, missing out on his eighth win of the season.
  • Houser's performance so far in a Rays uniform has not matched what he accomplished earlier in the year with the White Sox, and through five starts for his new team, he's managed a 4.85 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 19:9 K:BB through 26 innings.
  • Tampa Bay remains 4.5 games behind the third and final wild card spot. They need to go on a huge run to end the year.

Seattle Mariners ML (4 UNITS)

The Rays and Mariners are in the midst of the American League Wild Card race. The Mariners occupy the third and final spot. The Rays are still 4.5 games back of that coveted position, and they had a good start on their seven-game homestand. Unfortunately, they will have to deal with one of the AL’s better starters in George Kirby. He fired seven innings of two-run ball last week.  It was the 27-year-old's sixth time posting a quality start with two earned runs or fewer in his last seven outings. Seattle has won four of their last five against the Rays. Take the Mariners and Kirby to win.

UNDER (5 UNITS)

The leash was short for Adrian Houser last week after he fired an inefficient 86 pitches last week. According to Yahoo.com, he only threw 36% of his pitches in the zone, and the Nationals hitters were ready to take many of them. I like him to bounce back in this game against the Mariners, with both starters doing a good job pitching into the fifth inning. Houser threw five innings and struck out four in a start against the Mariners on August 10th. The total has gone under in seven of Seattle’s last 10 games facing AL opponents. Take the under.
