Mariners Take Game 1 in Toronto
Manager Dan Wilson and his Seattle Mariners were sizable +145 underdogs in Game 1 on Sunday night, but they stunned the home crowd in Ontario and pulled out a 3-1 series-opening victory over the Blue Jays. Bryce Miller, who was on short rest, stole the show, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing only one earned run in a winning effort. The bullpen was lights out, and Andres Munoz (1.0 IP, 0 ER) slammed the door and logged his second save of the playoffs. Offensively, Cal Raleigh homered, while Jorge Polanco added a couple of RBI knocks in a 2-for-4 day at the dish.
From this point, the second-seeded Mariners, who went 90-72 during the regular season, are priced at -240 to win the ALCS. It would be their first-ever AL Pennant. The M’s are sitting at +225 to win the World Series.
- As of this writing (Sunday night), the Mariners have yet to announce a starting pitcher for Game 2.
- Their pitching staff has been excellent this postseason, and out of 12 playoff teams, they’re ranked sixth in ERA (2.95) and first in WHIP (0.97).
- As for the bullpen specifically, they’re eighth (3.90) and third (1.03) in those respective categories.

Blue Jays’ Offense Limited in Game 1
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays entered the postseason with an A.L.-best record of 94-68. This earned them a bye through the wild card, and they cruised past the Yankees in four games in the Divisional Round. The Jays were well-rested, had home-field advantage, and saw their rotation turn over, essentially setting up a perfect situation for Game 1 on Sunday night. The sports betting market agreed, pricing Toronto as -165 moneyline favorites in the opener.
However, the Blue Jays were upset in Game 1, losing 3-1 to the Mariners. The offense was tough to come by, as George Springer’s lead-off home run in the bottom of the 1st was the only run, and one of just two hits for the home side. Kevin Gausman (5.2 IP, 2 ER) was serviceable in his start, but ultimately took the loss in the opener. Toronto is now a +195 underdog to win the series, while sliding to +550 longshots to win their first World Series since 1993.
- Trey Yesavage heads to the bump on Monday night, and the 22-year-old rookie is gearing up to make his fifth career start.
- The right-hander was lights out in his MLB postseason debut, blanking the Yankees across 5.1 innings and allowing only one walk.
- He racked up 11 strikeouts and picked up the win in the 13-7 rout.
- As for his regular-season numbers, Yesavage went 1-0 in three starts (14.0 IP), posting a 3.21 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.
Mariners vs. Blue Jays Pick
Moneyline Pick for Mariners vs. Blue Jays
- Toronto Blue Jays Moneyline (-125) (5 units)
I’m riding with the Blue Jays to bounce back and secure the victory on Monday night. This is about as much of a do-or-die game for Toronto as you can get without technically being so. The last thing the Jays want to do is travel to Seattle down 0-2 for a trio of games in this 2-3-2 ALCS format.
Toronto has been a juggernaut at the Rogers Centre this season, going 54-27 SU during the regular season and 2-1 SU during the postseason. Meanwhile, Seattle was an underwhelming 39-42 SU on the road during the regular campaign. The Blue Jays will also turn to a dynamic 22-year-old rookie in Trey Yesavage, who just carved up the Yankees for 5.1 no-hit innings in his postseason debut. With the city of Toronto behind him, I think he turns in a solid outing to help guide the Jays to a win.
Over/Under Pick for Mariners vs. Blue Jays
- Under 7.5 (+100) (5 units)
I’m going to play the under in this contest as well. Seattle’s strength is its pitching staff, which we saw in Game 1, where they limited Toronto to just one run on two hits. The Mariners’ pitchers have posted an excellent 2.95 team ERA and a 0.97 WHIP this postseason, while limiting the opposition to a .183 batting average.
On the flip side, the Jays will send Trey Yesavage to the bump. The rookie hasn’t allowed a single run in his last two starts, spanning 10.1 IP. Yesavage has a very solid 10.3 K/9 rate, and he’ll take on a Seattle offense that had the seventh-highest K% (23.3%) during the regular season. This is a decent matchup for the young starter, and I’ll bank on him doing his part to keep this game under the number.
