Starting Pitchers for St. Louis and Arizona

Andre Pallante is scheduled to start for St. Louis against Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez. Pallante enters with a 10-6 record, a 3.96 ERA, and a 1.26 WHIP across 100 innings. He has allowed 97 hits and 10 home runs while recording 72 strikeouts against 29 walks. Rodriguez owns an 8-3 record with a 2.29 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP through 114 innings. He has surrendered 94 hits and 12 home runs while producing 79 strikeouts and issuing 39 walks. Arizona’s probable starter holds the lower ERA and WHIP while having worked 14 more innings.

St. Louis Looks to Extend Its Winning Road Record

The Cardinals enter Sunday at 51-45 overall with a strong 25-19 record away from home. St. Louis has won three of its last five games, including a recent 5-4 victory over Arizona. The Cardinals also recently defeated Atlanta by scores of 4-1 and 2-1. Their losses during the five-game stretch were a narrow 4-3 result against Atlanta and an 8-4 defeat against Milwaukee. Four of the five contests were decided by three runs or fewer.

St. Louis is batting .242 with 776 hits, 434 runs, and 108 home runs. The Cardinals have compiled a .318 on-base percentage and a .390 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff owns a 4.11 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .251. St. Louis pitchers have issued 321 walks and accumulated 723 strikeouts. The Cardinals are 16-21 during day games.

St. Louis’ clearest strength in this matchup is its offensive production. The Cardinals lead Arizona in batting average, hits, runs, home runs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. St. Louis has scored 14 more runs and hit 17 more home runs. The Cardinals also hold the better overall and road records, although their losing day-game mark is a concern.

Arizona Seeks a Quick Response

The Diamondbacks enter the contest with a 49-48 overall record and a 27-21 record at home. Arizona has won four of its last five games despite recently losing 5-4 to St. Louis. The Diamondbacks previously earned three consecutive victories over Los Angeles by scores of 5-3, 9-2, and 9-3 after defeating San Diego 3-1. Arizona has scored 30 runs across its last five games while allowing only 14.

Arizona is batting .237 with 763 hits, 420 runs, and 91 home runs. The Diamondbacks own a .307 on-base percentage and a .386 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has posted a 4.20 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP while allowing opposing batters to hit .249. Arizona pitchers have issued 278 walks and recorded 660 strikeouts. The Diamondbacks hold an 18-18 record during day games.

Arizona’s most notable strength is its recent balance. The Diamondbacks have scored at least five runs in four consecutive games while holding three of their last five opponents to three runs or fewer. Their season pitching WHIP and opposing batting average are also better than the corresponding St. Louis marks. The scheduled starter’s 2.29 ERA provides Arizona with another meaningful pitching advantage.

St. Louis Cardinals vs Arizona Diamondbacks Picks and Prediction

St. Louis Cardinals vs Arizona Diamondbacks Pick

  • Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline

I am taking Arizona on the moneyline because the Diamondbacks have won four of their last five games and hold a 27-21 home record. Arizona’s scheduled starter also enters with a 2.29 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP, compared with a 3.96 ERA and 1.26 WHIP for the St. Louis starter. The Cardinals won the recent meeting and own the stronger overall offensive numbers, but Arizona’s recent scoring, home record, and starting-pitcher advantage make the Diamondbacks my preferred side.

St. Louis Cardinals vs Arizona Diamondbacks Total Pick

  • Pick: Under 8.5

Take the under if the total is set at 8.5. I am leaning under because Arizona’s probable starter owns a 2.29 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP across 114 innings. St. Louis has also held its opponent to one run in two of its last four games. Three of Arizona’s five recent contests finished with eight or fewer combined runs, as did three of the Cardinals’ last five. Although the latest meeting produced nine runs, the starting matchup provides enough support for a lower total.

Final Score Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks 4 – St. Louis Cardinals 3

This prediction was written before the completion of game play on Saturday.
