Can the Cardinals end 2025 with a bang?
The St. Louis Cardinals were in the postseason race for much of the 2025 campaign, but in the end, a 34-46 record away from home caught up to them as they were eliminated from playoff contention heading into the final stretch of the year. Last time out for the Cardinals was a tough loss to these Cubs, with Jordan Walker's two RBI representing a standout day as Michael McGreevy tossed 4.2 innings of three-run ball, with the team falling 7-3.
Can the Cubs enter the playoffs with momentum?
The Chicago Cubs may not have been the story of the year in the National League, but with the utmost consistency and a 49-31 record at home, they clinched their spot in the MLB Playoffs with a recent win, giving them hope of a deep run in 2025. With a 3.82 team ERA, the Cubs rank top-10 in baseball, and given that they've scored the fifth most runs in baseball this season, it's easy to see why they're seen as one of the more balanced teams heading into the MLB Playoffs.
Taking the mound for Chicago will be righty Javier Assad, making his eighth appearance of the season after putting together a 4.36 ERA in that time, with 41 baserunners allowed thus far over his 31.2 innings of work. Last time out for the Cubs was a big win over the Cardinals, with Michael Busch driving in four runs as 6.0 innings from Jameson Taillon led them to clinch the top Wild Card spot in the National League.
