Starting Pitchers

St. Louis is scheduled to start Matthew Liberatore, who enters at 5-13 with a 5.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP through 134.2 innings. Liberatore has allowed 151 hits and 47 walks while striking out 141 and surrendering 25 home runs. Colorado counters with Mason Adams, who has worked only nine innings while posting a 3.00 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. Adams has allowed eight hits and five walks while recording 10 strikeouts and giving up two home runs. Colorado has the more intriguing starting numbers, but the extremely small sample makes it difficult to treat the ERA difference as a decisive advantage. St. Louis has considerably more information on which to judge its starter, although his season-long numbers create legitimate concerns heading into Coors Field.

St. Louis Looks for an Offensive Advantage

St. Louis enters Saturday one game below .500 at 70-71 but has been slightly better than .500 away from home with a 36-33 road record. The Cardinals have gone 2-3 over their last five completed games, although both victories came during a difficult road series against Los Angeles. St. Louis won those games by scores of 13-8 and 8-6 in 10 innings, demonstrating considerable offensive upside. The Cardinals also entered the current series leading Colorado 2-1 in their completed season meetings, with the teams combining for at least 10 runs in two of those three games.

The Cardinals are batting .242 with 1,149 hits, 633 runs and 150 home runs while carrying a .316 on-base percentage and .384 slugging percentage. Those numbers actually trail Colorado in several offensive categories, but St. Louis has recently demonstrated an ability to produce big scoring performances on the road. The Cardinals scored 21 combined runs during their two victories over Los Angeles and now get another favorable offensive environment in Denver. Generating baserunners consistently will be important because Colorado has allowed opponents to hit .287 this season.

Pitching is the biggest concern for St. Louis in this matchup, but the Cardinals still own a substantial season-long advantage over Colorado. St. Louis enters with a 4.24 team ERA and 1.35 WHIP while opponents are batting .253. Those aren't dominant numbers, but they are considerably better than Colorado's 5.42 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and .287 opponent batting average. The Cardinals have also recorded 1,113 strikeouts compared with only 951 for the Rockies. Even with a vulnerable starter taking the mound, St. Louis owns the stronger overall run-prevention profile.

Colorado's Offense Keeps the Rockies Dangerous

Colorado enters Saturday at 54-86 overall and 29-39 at Coors Field. The Rockies have struggled throughout the season, but they had won consecutive completed games entering the current series, beating Baltimore 4-2 and then 6-5 in 11 innings. Colorado has also played four consecutive one-run or two-run games, suggesting that its recent performances have been considerably more competitive than the overall record might indicate. The Rockies already own an 8-6 victory over St. Louis from their earlier series, so they have shown they can exploit this matchup.

Colorado's offense has been better than its record suggests. The Rockies are batting .253 with 1,204 hits, 655 runs and 154 home runs while posting a .323 on-base percentage and .415 slugging percentage. Every one of those major offensive categories is better than St. Louis' corresponding number. Colorado has scored 22 more runs, collected 55 more hits and owns a 31-point advantage in slugging percentage. Against a visiting starter carrying a 5.41 ERA, the Rockies should have opportunities to produce runs.

The problem continues to be Colorado's pitching. The Rockies own a 5.42 team ERA and 1.52 WHIP while opponents are batting .287, all substantially worse than St. Louis' pitching marks. Colorado has also recorded only 951 strikeouts, which is 162 fewer than the Cardinals. The scheduled starter has encouraging numbers through nine innings, but that sample is far too small to erase the broader concerns surrounding the pitching staff. Colorado's offense and home-field environment give the Rockies upset potential, but asking their pitching to contain St. Louis for nine innings is difficult.

St. Louis Cardinals vs Colorado Rockies Picks and Prediction

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals Moneyline (-126)

St. Louis -126 is the preferred side rather than laying 1.5 runs. Colorado has the statistical advantage offensively and ESPN Analytics favors the Rockies, but the Cardinals own the substantially better overall record and pitching profile. St. Louis is also 36-33 on the road compared with Colorado's 29-39 home mark. Most importantly, the Cardinals' 4.24 team ERA and 1.35 WHIP are considerably better than Colorado's 5.42 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. The Rockies can score enough to keep this competitive, especially against a vulnerable opposing starter, but St. Louis should have the advantage once the game moves beyond the starting pitchers.

Pick: Over 11 (+100)

The Over 11 is worth backing at even money despite the unusually high number. St. Louis' scheduled starter enters with a 5.41 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 25 home runs allowed, while Colorado's offense owns a .253 average and .415 slugging percentage. On the other side, the Rockies have a 5.42 team ERA, 1.52 WHIP and .287 opponent batting average, creating plenty of opportunities for St. Louis to contribute heavily to the total. Two of the three completed meetings between these teams this season reached double digits, including Colorado's 8-6 victory. With both pitching staffs carrying significant vulnerabilities and the game being played at Coors Field, Over 11 at +100 offers the better value.

Final Picks: St. Louis Cardinals Moneyline (-126) and Over 11 (+100)
