The Giants are hosting the Cardinals this Wednesday night for the third game of their San Francisco series, and we're previewing the lines and odds in our Cardinals vs. Giants prediction. The Cards took home both of the series' first two games; they're now up to 8-2 in their last ten meetings with the Giants. Game 3 will start at 9:45 PM ET on Wednesday, September 24.

Can Cards push for a berth?
The Cardinals aren't out of the MLB playoff picture at 78-80 and fourth in the NL Central, but they'd need a few things to break their way in the last week. That includes winning each of their remaining games–starting with finishing the sweep against a Giants team they've narrowly but roundly handled in 2025. After their 9-8 win on Tuesday, the Cardinals are 4-1 against the Giants this season with four straight one-run wins in September.
Ivan Herrera hit a home run in both Monday's 6-5 win and Tuesday's 9-8 win. The Cards notched 15 hits on 39 at-bats on Tuesday, including two from Herrera that accounted for three RBIs. Nolan Arenado hit another home run in the seventh inning on Tuesday, and the Cards got the two runs they needed to win in the ninth inning from Brendan Donovan batting in Victor Scott and Alec Burleson batting in Jose Fermin, who'd run for Donovan.
Sonny Gray is starting for the Cardinals on Wednesday. He's 14-8 this season with a 4.33 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 194 strikeouts.

Will Giants avoid the sweep?
The Giants, at 77-81, currently sit at fourth in the NL West and 4.5 games behind in the wildcard race with only four games left to play. They aren't mathematically eliminated heading into Wednesday, but their hopes depend on an 81-76 Mets team losing all five of their remaining games. They also depend on the Giants pulling out a win against a Cardinals team they've gone 1-4 against this season and 2-8 against in their last ten meetings.
Both of the Giants' losses from the past two days were decided by a single run. Both games included innings in which the Cardinals scored four runs—the top of the fifth on Monday and the top of the seventh on Tuesday. Heliot Ramos gave the Giants a home run in each game, as well as two hits in each game and four total RBIs.
JT Brubaker is currently set to start on the mound for San Francisco. He's a relief pitcher, with just over eight innings pitched across four games since the Giants promoted him to the active roster on the first of the month. Only one of those appearances – the 10-8 win over the Colorado Rockies – ended in a win for the Giants.
Top Team vs Bottom Team Pick
Spread Pick for Top Team vs Bottom Team
- Cardinals +1.5 (-200) (4 Units)
After how this series has unfolded this season, with the Cardinals looking to have a pitching advantage on Wednesday, I wouldn't touch the Giants. Least of all against the run line, where the Cards only have to stay with a run of the Giants or win outright to cover. I'd take the Cards here.
Over/Under Pick for Top Team vs Bottom Team
- Over 7.5 (-110) (4 Units)
The Team Total Over is 7-3 in the last ten meetings between these teams, including the two-game streak it's been on in such meetings since Monday. In seven of those last ten meetings, the winner of the game scored at least six points. I'd take the points here again, especially with a relief pitcher on the mound for the Giants.
