Rays seek to snap losing run
The Rays (71-72) will be looking to get back in the W column on Tuesday after dropping their last three games to Cleveland. That run has put another big dent in Tampa Bay's already slim postseason hopes. It trails the Mariners by 4.0 games in the race for the last AL Wild Card spot, with three other teams between the Rays and Seattle going into the final straight of this 2025 MLB regular season.
Adrian Houser will get the start for the Rays in Tuesday's series opener. The right-hander has the chance to impress against his old team: he began the season on the White Sox roster before being traded to Tampa Bay at the deadline. Houser has struggled to replicate his success in Chicago, going 6-2 with a 2.10 ERA for the Sox in 11 starts and 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA off six outings with the Rays. Last time out he pitched seven innings to get the win against Seattle, giving up four runs while striking out eight.

Sox go on tear
The White Sox (55-89) are on their best run of this difficult 2025 season. They have won seven of their last eight games and are 6-1 so far in September, a record that nevertheless does little to change their prospects for the year. The Sox hold the worst record in the AL and sit 20.5 games out of the Wild Card race, eliminating them from postseason contention for another year.
Yoendrys Gomez will be on the mound for the Sox on Tuesday. Chicago is Gomez's third organization of 2025, having previously pitched of the Yankees and Dodgers. He was claimed off waivers in May and has since made eight appearances (five starts) for the White Sox, going 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA. The 25-year-old held the Twins to two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings while striking out five batters to get a no-decision.
Rays vs. White Sox pick
Spread Pick for Rays vs. White Sox
- White Sox ML (4 units)
The Sox are coming off two impressive road series wins against the Twins and Tigers and I am backing them to keep that momentum going and take the W against the slumping Rays. A liability for most of the season, the White Sox bats have suddenly come alive, putting up a .851 OPS so far in September that ranks sixth in MLB, while only the Mariners have hit more home runs than Chicago's tally of 12 this month. The home team will be confident against a Rays lineup that has managed just four runs in its last three outings. The Rays are 33-36 this year on the road and 44-54 playing against AL opposition.
Take the White Sox on the moneyline.
Over/under Pick for Rays vs. White Sox
- Under (5 units)
Rate Field is a tough place to score runs and the White Sox have felt that all year. The Sox have a team OPS of .673 playing at home, ranking 29th in MLB and 20 points below their road mark, while averaging 4.02 runs per game on the South Side. The Rays have had the opposite problem and struggle to hit outside of their temporary home at George M. Steinbrenner Field. They have a .678 OPS on the road (26th in MLB) compared to .754 at home. Tampa Bay has gone 30-36-3 on the road this year.
Take the under.
