Houston Astros Trying to Stay in the AL West Race

Houston has remained competitive despite an inconsistent first half. The Astros are batting .242 as a team with 400 runs, 725 hits, 116 home runs, a .316 on-base percentage, and a .409 slugging percentage. Yordan Alvarez has been one of the best hitters in baseball, batting .319 with 26 home runs, 60 RBI, and a .433 on-base percentage. Christian Walker has added 19 home runs and 56 RBI, Isaac Paredes has contributed 11 home runs, while Jeremy Peña is batting .295. Houston has enough power to score quickly, but consistency has been an issue throughout the season.

Pitching has been Houston's biggest concern. The Astros rank 26th in MLB with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP while allowing 123 home runs this season. Although Hunter Brown has pitched well in limited action, Houston's staff has struggled to consistently slow opposing lineups, especially against stronger offensive clubs.

Injuries: Christian Walker (Day-to-Day), Raynel Delgado (Day-to-Day), Cristian Javier (60-Day IL), LaMonte Wade Jr. (10-Day IL), Braden Shewmake (10-Day IL).

Pitching Matchup

Tampa Bay Rays – Drew Rasmussen

Rasmussen is 7-4 with a 2.45 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP over 92.0 innings. He has allowed only 64 hits while striking out 94 batters and walking just 16.

Houston Astros – Hunter Brown

Brown is 1-0 with a 1.78 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP across 25.1 innings. He has surrendered 17 hits while recording 32 strikeouts.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Houston Astros Game Pick

  • Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa Bay enters this matchup playing its best baseball of the season with eight consecutive victories. Rasmussen has been one of the most reliable starters in the American League, posting a 2.45 ERA with outstanding command and limiting baserunners all season. The Rays also hold the offensive advantage with the second-best batting average in baseball, while Houston's pitching staff ranks near the bottom third of the league in ERA. Tampa Bay has the stronger overall roster and is the play to continue its winning streak.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Houston Astros Over/Under Pick

  • Under

While both lineups feature dangerous hitters, this game is defined by the starting pitching matchup. Rasmussen has been dominant throughout the season with a 0.87 WHIP, while Brown has allowed just two home runs across 25.1 innings. Tampa Bay's pitching staff ranks among the league's best. The Rays have been winning with outstanding pitching during their current streak, allowing very few scoring opportunities while consistently protecting late leads. The under is the play here.
