Starting Pitchers

Tampa Bay will send Ian Seymour to the mound against Seattle's Emerson Hancock. Seymour enters with an 8-3 record, 4.27 ERA and 1.13 WHIP across 84.1 innings. The left-hander has allowed 67 hits and 13 home runs while recording 99 strikeouts against 28 walks. Hancock is 6-6 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 116.1 innings. The Mariners right-hander has surrendered 96 hits and 15 home runs while striking out 108 and walking 29.

Tampa Bay Brings the Better Overall Profile

The Rays entered Saturday at 69-46 overall and 28-28 on the road. Tampa Bay had won four consecutive games and four of its last five completed contests after beating Seattle 2-1 Friday. The Rays previously swept three games at Colorado by scores of 4-0, 9-7 in 11 innings and 13-9. Tampa Bay's only loss during the five-game stretch was a 9-1 defeat against the White Sox.

Tampa Bay is batting .258 this season with 512 runs, 990 hits and 118 home runs. The Rays have a .329 on-base percentage and .403 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has been another strength, producing a 3.71 ERA and 1.15 WHIP while holding opponents to a .229 batting average. Tampa Bay pitchers have recorded 943 strikeouts while issuing only 299 walks.

The Rays have the more complete statistical profile in this matchup. Tampa Bay has scored 53 more runs than Seattle despite hitting fewer home runs, and the Rays hold substantial advantages in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Their pitching staff also owns the better ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average. The one concern is Tampa Bay's .500 road record compared with Seattle's winning mark at T-Mobile Park.

Seattle Looks to Lean on Hancock at Home

The Mariners entered Saturday at 56-61 overall with a 33-27 record at T-Mobile Park. Seattle was 2-3 over its last five completed games after losing Friday's series opener 2-1. The Mariners were shut out 11-0 by Detroit in their previous game after beating the Tigers 4-2. Seattle also lost 8-0 to Detroit before beginning the five-game stretch with a 7-6 victory over Minnesota.

Seattle is batting .229 this season with 459 runs, 885 hits and 135 home runs. The Mariners have a .309 on-base percentage and .375 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff owns a 3.81 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, while opponents are batting .243. Seattle pitchers have recorded 999 strikeouts against 292 walks.

The Mariners' power and Hancock give them a path to winning this game. Seattle has hit 17 more home runs than Tampa Bay, while Hancock has the better individual starting numbers with a 3.33 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. The problem is an offense that has been held to one run or fewer in three of its last four completed games. Seattle cannot afford another quiet offensive performance against a Tampa Bay team that has consistently found ways to win.

Tampa Bay Rays vs Seattle Mariners Picks and Prediction

Pick: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline

The Tampa Bay Rays are the pick to win Sunday's game.

ESPN Analytics sees essentially a toss-up, with Seattle holding only a 50.7% win probability. Hancock also gives the Mariners a legitimate starting pitching advantage based on ERA and WHIP. However, Tampa Bay has enough advantages elsewhere to make the Rays the preferred side.

The offensive difference is particularly important. Tampa Bay is batting .258 compared with Seattle at .229, while the Rays have a .329 on-base percentage against .309 for the Mariners. Tampa Bay has also scored 512 runs compared with Seattle's 459.

The Rays also entered Saturday having won four consecutive games, while Seattle had lost three of five. Tampa Bay's pitching staff has a slightly better ERA and WHIP and has held opposing hitters to only a .229 batting average.

Seattle's home record and Hancock keep this matchup close, but Tampa Bay is the more complete team.

Take the Tampa Bay Rays to win.

Pick: Tampa Bay Rays +1.5

The Tampa Bay Rays +1.5 are the preferred run-line selection.

This matchup projects to be competitive, making the extra run and a half particularly attractive. Friday's series opener was decided by one run, and ESPN Analytics essentially splits the matchup down the middle.

Hancock's 3.33 ERA and 1.07 WHIP make it difficult to expect Tampa Bay to run away with the game. At the same time, the Rays' superior offense and overall pitching numbers make it equally difficult to justify laying 1.5 runs with Seattle.

Tampa Bay has the stronger overall record and has played much better baseball recently. Taking the Rays with an additional 1.5 runs provides protection if Sunday's game develops into another close contest.

Take Tampa Bay +1.5.

Pick: Under 7.5

The under is the preferred total if the number is set at 7.5.

The starting pitching matchup provides the foundation for a lower-scoring game. Hancock enters with a 3.33 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, while Seymour's 4.27 ERA is accompanied by a much stronger 1.13 WHIP. Seymour has also struck out 99 hitters in 84.1 innings.

Seattle's recent offensive struggles make the under even more attractive. The Mariners have been shut out twice in their last four completed games and scored only one run in Friday's loss to Tampa Bay.

T-Mobile Park also gets two pitching staffs that have performed well statistically this season. Tampa Bay owns a 3.71 team ERA and Seattle is at 3.81. Friday's opener produced only three combined runs, and another game dominated by pitching is a realistic outcome Sunday.

The low number creates limited margin for error, but Seattle's inconsistent offense and the quality of both pitching staffs make the under the preferred direction.

Take the under if the total is set at 7.5.

Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays 4, Seattle Mariners 2
