Starting Pitchers

Texas will start Kumar Rocker, who enters at 4-9 with a 4.46 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 111 innings. Rocker has allowed 111 hits and 42 walks while recording 103 strikeouts and surrendering 16 home runs. The Athletics counter with Gage Jump, who is 5-7 with an identical 4.46 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP through 72.2 innings. Jump has allowed 73 hits and 33 walks while striking out 84 and giving up seven home runs. There is very little separation in ERA, although Rocker owns the slightly better WHIP while Jump has produced more strikeouts relative to his workload.

Rangers Need to Take Advantage of This Matchup

Texas has won two of its last five games and enters Friday on a two-game losing streak. The Rangers dropped consecutive games against Los Angeles by scores of 5-2 and 3-2 after earning a 4-1 victory in 10 innings. Texas also split its starting two games against Baltimore, losing 10-5 after a 5-1 victory. The Rangers remain one game below .500 and have gone 28-34 away from home.

The Rangers are batting .243 with a .317 on-base percentage and .397 slugging percentage. Texas has scored 497 runs on 979 hits while producing 136 home runs. The pitching staff owns a 4.25 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while opponents are batting .247.

Texas has not produced overwhelming offensive numbers, but its pitching provides a major advantage in this matchup. The Rangers' team ERA is more than a full run better than the Athletics' mark, while Texas also owns significant advantages in WHIP and opponent batting average. Those differences could become particularly important once Friday's starters leave the game.

Athletics Return Home After Difficult Series

The Athletics have lost three straight games after winning the previous two. They were swept in their most recent three-game set, allowing 30 combined runs in losses of 8-4, 12-4 and 10-6. Before that skid, the Athletics recorded consecutive road victories by scores of 4-3 and 7-3. They return to Sacramento with a 21-39 home record.

The Athletics are batting .243 with a .316 on-base percentage and .399 slugging percentage. They have scored 524 runs on 999 hits while hitting 143 home runs. Pitching has been the major weakness, with the staff carrying a 5.51 ERA and 1.51 WHIP while allowing opponents to hit .270.

Offensively, the Athletics actually hold slight statistical advantages over Texas. They have scored 27 more runs and produced 20 more hits and seven more home runs while carrying an almost identical slash line. The problem is preventing runs. A 5.51 team ERA and .270 opponent batting average leave very little margin for error, especially after allowing double-digit runs in consecutive games.

Texas Rangers vs Athletics Picks and Prediction

Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline

Texas is the preferred side despite the Athletics holding a 4-3 advantage in the season series. The starting pitching matchup is close, but the Rangers have a substantial advantage once the entire pitching staff is considered. Texas owns the better team ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average, while the Athletics have struggled badly at home at 21-39. Neither club enters in particularly strong form, but the pitching disparity makes Texas the better moneyline play.

Pick: Over 8.5

With no confirmed total available, take the Over if the total is set at 8.5 or lower. Both starters carry 4.46 ERAs, while the Athletics enter with a 5.51 team ERA and 1.51 WHIP. Their last three games have produced 12, 16 and 16 combined runs, with the Athletics allowing 30 runs during that stretch. Texas has been less productive offensively, but this is a favorable matchup for the Rangers to generate runs. At 8.5 or lower, the Over is the preferred total.
