Starting Pitchers

Texas will turn to Jacob deGrom, who enters with a 9-8 record, 3.77 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 126.2 innings. He has allowed 111 hits while recording 157 strikeouts against only 32 walks, with 17 home runs surrendered. Chicago counters with Anthony Kay, who is 9-6 with a 3.96 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 127.1 innings. Kay has allowed 124 hits while recording 104 strikeouts, 45 walks and 16 home runs allowed. The numbers give Texas an advantage in Tuesday's starting matchup, particularly in WHIP and strikeout-to-walk production.

Rangers Look for More Consistency on the Road

Texas enters Tuesday one game below .500 at 65-66 and has struggled to establish consistent success away from home, where the Rangers are 29-37. They have nevertheless played better recently, winning three of their last five. Texas defeated Los Angeles 5-3 in its most recent completed game after splitting the previous two games of that series. The Rangers have also posted recent 2-1 and 2-0 victories, demonstrating how important pitching has become to their path to success.

The Rangers are batting .241 with 1,047 hits, 521 runs and 143 home runs. They own a .314 on-base percentage and .392 slugging percentage. Texas has actually produced a slightly better batting average than Chicago, but the Rangers trail significantly in overall scoring and power production. Chicago has scored 97 more runs and hit 31 more home runs.

Pitching has also been inconsistent across the full season. Texas owns a 4.19 team ERA and 1.29 WHIP while opponents are batting .247. The staff has recorded 1,104 strikeouts against 387 walks. One positive is the Rangers' ability to limit free passes compared with Chicago, and Tuesday's starting matchup provides them with an opportunity to control the game from the mound.

White Sox Lean on Home Field and Power

Chicago enters at 68-62 and sits atop the American League Central. The White Sox have been particularly effective at Rate Field, posting a 39-26 home record. They have also won three of their last five, including a 2-1 victory over New York in their most recent completed contest. Chicago's other recent victories came by scores of 6-4 and 3-0.

The White Sox are batting .237 with 1,036 hits, but their offensive production has been considerably stronger than Texas in several important categories. Chicago has scored 618 runs and hit 174 home runs while producing a .318 on-base percentage and .409 slugging percentage. The White Sox therefore hold advantages in runs, power, OBP and slugging despite their slightly lower batting average.

Chicago owns a 4.09 team ERA and 1.30 WHIP while opponents are batting .239. The staff has struck out 1,099 while issuing 464 walks. Chicago's season ERA and opponent batting average are slightly better than Texas, although the Rangers have the marginally lower WHIP. The White Sox's biggest advantage in this matchup is their combination of stronger offensive production and a 39-26 home record.

Texas Rangers vs Chicago White Sox Picks and Prediction

Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline

Chicago has the superior record, stronger home performance and better season-long offensive numbers, but Tuesday's pitching matchup provides a reasonable path to an upset for Texas. The Rangers' starter owns the lower ERA and WHIP while holding a major strikeout advantage, with 157 strikeouts against only 32 walks. Chicago's starter has recorded 104 strikeouts against 45 walks over a nearly identical workload. Texas has also won three of its last five, with pitching driving several of those victories. Chicago deserves respect at home, but the starting-pitching advantage is enough to lean toward the Rangers. Take Texas on the moneyline.

Pick: Under 8.0

The Under is the preferred total if the number opens around 8.0. Texas has been involved in several extremely low-scoring games recently, with four of its last five producing eight or fewer combined runs and three finishing with three runs or fewer. Chicago has also played two games during its last five that ended 2-1 and 3-0. With Texas holding the stronger starting-pitching profile and both clubs capable of winning through run prevention, this matchup has a better chance of becoming a controlled game than the season-long offensive numbers might initially suggest. Take the Under 8.0.
