Starting Pitchers

Texas has not announced its starting pitcher for Tuesday's matchup. Los Angeles is scheduled to start Ryan Johnson, who enters at 2-6 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.60 WHIP through 50.2 innings. The right-hander has allowed 56 hits and 25 walks while striking out 38 and surrendering 13 home runs. Johnson's combination of a high ERA, elevated WHIP and 13 homers allowed in just over 50 innings creates an opportunity for the Rangers regardless of who ultimately starts for Texas.

Rangers Look to Resume Their Recent Surge

Texas enters Tuesday at 59-59 overall and sits just a half-game behind Houston in the AL West. The Rangers are 4-1 over their last five games despite having their four-game winning streak snapped by a 10-5 loss to Baltimore on Sunday. Texas defeated the Orioles 5-1 and 2-1 before that loss and opened the five-game stretch with consecutive victories over San Francisco.

The Rangers are batting .244 with a .317 on-base percentage and .400 slugging percentage this season. Texas has scored 489 runs while collecting 958 hits and hitting 134 home runs. The pitching staff has posted a 4.28 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while opponents are batting .247.

Texas has not been an especially productive offensive club, but this is an inviting matchup for its lineup. The Rangers have advantages over Los Angeles in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and home runs. They have also scored at least five runs in four of their last five games, giving them an opportunity to capitalize on Johnson's season-long struggles.

Angels Search for Answers After Rough Weekend

Los Angeles enters at 45-73 overall and 25-33 at Angel Stadium. The Angels have lost two straight and three of their last five games after a difficult weekend in Miami. Los Angeles was outscored 19-3 over its final two games against the Marlins, including a 7-0 shutout loss Saturday followed by a 12-3 defeat Sunday.

The Angels are batting .236 with a .311 on-base percentage and .379 slugging percentage. Los Angeles has scored 484 runs while collecting 930 hits and hitting 123 home runs. The pitching staff owns a 4.53 ERA and 1.38 WHIP, both worse than Texas' season marks.

Los Angeles has enjoyed success against Texas this season, but the pitching matchup creates a significant concern. Johnson has struggled to keep runners off base and has allowed a home run approximately once every four innings. The Angels' offense has also been inconsistent, scoring three runs or fewer in three of its last five games.

Texas Rangers vs Los Angeles Angels Picks and Prediction

Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline

Texas is the preferred side even with its starting pitcher still undecided. The Rangers have won four of their last five games and are battling for the AL West lead, while Los Angeles sits 28 games below .500 and has dropped consecutive games. Johnson's 7.11 ERA and 1.60 WHIP are the most important numbers in this matchup, especially against a Texas lineup that has scored five or more runs in four of its last five. The Rangers also own the better offensive and pitching statistics across most of the major categories. Take the Texas Rangers on the moneyline.

Total Pick: Over 8.5

The Over 8.5 is the preferred total because Johnson's struggles give Texas considerable scoring upside, while the Rangers' undecided starter introduces uncertainty on the other side. Johnson has surrendered 56 hits, 25 walks and 13 home runs through only 50.2 innings, and the Angels carry a 4.53 team ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Texas has scored 23 runs over its last five games, while three of the six completed meetings between these clubs have reached at least 10 combined runs. With Los Angeles vulnerable on the mound and Texas' pitching situation unsettled, take the Over 8.5 if that number is available.
