Starting Pitchers

Toronto is scheduled to start Spencer Arrighetti, who enters at 7-8 with a 4.82 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 99 innings. Arrighetti has allowed 78 hits and 55 walks while striking out 97 and surrendering 15 home runs. Kansas City counters with Randy Dobnak, who is 2-3 with a 2.65 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 57.2 innings. Dobnak has allowed 57 hits and 23 walks while recording 40 strikeouts and giving up five home runs. Kansas City owns the clear ERA advantage, while Toronto's starter has a slightly better WHIP and a much stronger strikeout rate.

Toronto Has the Better Recent Form

Toronto enters Sunday at 71-71 overall and 34-36 on the road. The Blue Jays have won four of their last five completed games, including Friday's 9-2 victory in Kansas City and consecutive road wins over Cleveland before arriving for this series. Toronto has scored at least six runs in each of its last three victories and has outscored opponents 26-5 during its current three-game winning streak. The Blue Jays have been playing their best baseball of this recent stretch and enter with considerably more momentum than Kansas City.

The Blue Jays are batting .247 with 1,182 hits, 575 runs and 134 home runs while carrying a .309 on-base percentage and .382 slugging percentage. Those numbers are relatively close to Kansas City's overall offensive production, though the Royals own slight advantages in batting average, runs, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Toronto does hold a tiny advantage in total hits, and its recent scoring surge has been much stronger than what the full-season numbers alone suggest.

Toronto's pitching staff owns a 3.91 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while holding opponents to a .237 batting average. Those are substantial advantages over Kansas City's 4.74 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and .258 opponent batting average. The Blue Jays also have recorded 1,234 strikeouts compared with 1,033 for the Royals. Sunday's starting matchup is not ideal for Toronto, but the broader pitching profile strongly favors the visitors.

Kansas City Needs Its Starter to Set the Tone

Kansas City enters Sunday at 63-79 overall but has been much more competitive at Kauffman Stadium, where the Royals are 37-33. They have lost four of their last five completed games, including Friday's 9-2 setback against Toronto. Their only win during that span was a 7-3 victory over Miami. The Royals have allowed at least six runs in four of their last five games, which has made it difficult to overcome their inconsistent offensive production.

The Royals are batting .248 with 1,180 hits, 608 runs and 148 home runs while posting a .316 on-base percentage and .403 slugging percentage. Kansas City owns small advantages over Toronto in most major offensive categories, including a 33-run edge and 14 more home runs. The difference is not overwhelming, but the Royals do have the stronger season-long offensive profile and enough power to take advantage of a vulnerable opposing starter.

Kansas City's biggest concern remains run prevention. The Royals carry a 4.74 team ERA and 1.39 WHIP while opponents are batting .258, all significantly worse than Toronto's numbers. Sunday's scheduled starter provides some reason for optimism with a 2.65 ERA, but the 1.39 WHIP suggests traffic on the bases can still become an issue. Kansas City needs a strong outing early because the full staff has been considerably less reliable than Toronto's over the season.

Toronto Blue Jays vs Kansas City Royals Picks and Prediction

Pick: Toronto Blue Jays Moneyline

Toronto is the preferred side despite ESPN Analytics favoring Kansas City. The Blue Jays have won four of their last five, are on a three-game winning streak and dominated Friday's series opener 9-2. More importantly, Toronto owns major advantages in team ERA, WHIP and opponent batting average. Kansas City has the better starting-pitcher ERA, but that edge is offset by a weaker overall pitching staff and recent defensive struggles. With Toronto playing the better baseball right now, the Blue Jays moneyline is the preferred play if the market offers a reasonable price.

Pick: Over 8.5

Over 8.5 is the preferred target number. Toronto's scheduled starter enters with a 4.82 ERA and has issued 55 walks in 99 innings, while Kansas City owns a slightly stronger season-long offensive profile than the Blue Jays. On the other side, the Royals' team pitching numbers are poor, with a 4.74 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and .258 opponent batting average. Toronto has also scored 26 runs over its last three victories. Even if Kansas City's starter keeps the game under control early, there should be enough opportunities against both staffs for this matchup to reach nine runs.

Final Picks: Toronto Blue Jays Moneyline and Over 8.5
