Starting Pitchers
JosĂ© Soriano is scheduled to start for Toronto against Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler. Soriano is 9-6 with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP through 123 innings. He has allowed 97 hits and 12 home runs while recording 127 strikeouts against 57 walks. Wheeler is 10-2 with a 2.49 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP across 105 innings. He has surrendered only 73 hits and 13 home runs, with 126 strikeouts and 23 walks.Â
Blue Jays Face a Difficult Assignment in Philadelphia
Toronto has gone 3-2 over its last five completed games, improving to 54-61 overall and 26-30 away from home. The Blue Jays recently defeated Houston 5-4 in 10 innings after losing the previous game 7-2. Toronto opened that series with a 3-1 victory. Before traveling to Houston, the Blue Jays split their final two home games against St. Louis, winning 5-1 before losing 5-1. Toronto scored 16 runs while allowing 18 across those five contests.
The Blue Jays have scored 449 runs this season while producing a .241 batting average, a .302 on-base percentage and a .377 slugging percentage. Toronto’s pitching staff owns a 4.06 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. The overall run differential is also a concern, with the Blue Jays allowing 509 runs through their first 115 games. Toronto is averaging approximately 3.9 runs while permitting about 4.4 runs per contest.
Toronto’s clearest path involves keeping the game close behind Soriano. The right-hander has allowed fewer than one hit per inning and has limited opponents to 12 home runs over 123 innings. However, his 57 walks could become a problem against a Philadelphia offense capable of applying pressure through both power and baserunning. The Blue Jays cannot afford to provide the home team with additional scoring opportunities.
The greater concern is Toronto’s lineup against Wheeler. The Blue Jays rank near the bottom of the majors in runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. They scored three runs or fewer in three of their last five games, and their latest victory required extra innings. Generating an early lead against one of the strongest starters in baseball will be difficult.
Phillies Bring Strong Recent Form Into the Series
Philadelphia has won four of its last five completed games and enters Friday at 61-54 overall. The Phillies are 30-28 at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia recently lost 10-4 in 11 innings against Washington, but that result followed four consecutive victories. The Phillies defeated Washington 5-0 and 6-3 after recording 8-0 and 5-0 road wins against Baltimore. Philadelphia scored 28 runs while allowing only 13 during that five-game stretch.
The Phillies have scored 505 runs with a .237 batting average, a .305 on-base percentage and a .399 slugging percentage. Philadelphia has accumulated 909 hits, 145 home runs and 87 stolen bases. The pitching staff carries a 4.20 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and a .251 opponent batting average, with 1,121 strikeouts against 344 walks. Those overall pitching numbers are fairly ordinary, but Wheeler gives Philadelphia a substantial advantage at the beginning of Friday’s game.
Philadelphia’s recent run prevention stands out. The Phillies recorded three shutouts during their four-game winning streak and allowed only three total runs across those victories. Wednesday’s late collapse against Washington was damaging to the five-game totals, but it does not erase the quality of the previous four performances.
Wheeler’s control is especially important in this matchup. He has issued only 23 walks through 105 innings and owns a 0.91 WHIP. Toronto has struggled to create consistent baserunners, so Philadelphia should be able to dictate the early portion of the game. The Phillies also possess the stronger season-long offense and have scored 56 more runs than the Blue Jays.
Toronto Blue Jays vs Philadelphia Phillies Picks and Prediction
-
Pick: Philadelphia Phillies -1.5
I am taking Philadelphia on the run line if bettors can find a reasonable price. The Phillies have the better record, the stronger recent form and the decisive starting-pitching advantage. Wheeler has allowed only 96 combined hits and walks through 105 innings, giving Toronto very few easy paths to sustained offense.
Philadelphia covered the -1.5 run line in each of its four recent victories, winning those games by five, eight, three and five runs. Toronto can remain competitive behind Soriano, but the Blue Jays’ lack of season-long production makes it difficult to trust them against a starter with a 2.49 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. The Philadelphia moneyline is playable, but the price is too expensive for my preference. I would rather accept the additional risk and back the Phillies -1.5.
-
Pick: Under 8.5
I am also leaning under if the total is set at 8.5. Soriano has a 3.29 ERA with only 97 hits allowed in 123 innings, while Wheeler has been even stronger. Toronto has scored three runs or fewer in three of its last five games, and Philadelphia recorded three shutouts during its recent four-game winning streak.
The late innings create some risk because neither club owns an elite season-long bullpen profile. However, the quality of the starting matchup should keep the early scoring under control. I would play the under at 8.5, but I would pass if the total drops to 7.5 because that number provides insufficient protection against the bullpens and the hitter-friendly dimensions of Citizens Bank Park.
