Starting Pitchers

Toronto will send Shane Bieber to the mound against Philadelphia's Jesus Luzardo. Bieber enters the matchup with a 3-2 record, 5.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 37.0 innings. The right-hander has allowed 42 hits and seven home runs while recording 28 strikeouts against 20 walks. Luzardo has been considerably more effective, entering at 10-5 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.16 WHIP through 136.2 innings. The Phillies left-hander has allowed 116 hits and 12 home runs while striking out 164 and walking 43.

Toronto Tries to Continue Its Competitive Road Stretch

Toronto enters Sunday's matchup with a 55-62 overall record and 27-31 mark on the road. The Blue Jays have gone 3-2 over their last five completed games, beginning that stretch with a 3-1 victory over Houston. Toronto then lost 7-2 to the Astros before responding with a 5-4 win in 10 innings. The Blue Jays lost 3-2 in 11 innings against the Cubs before opening this series with Friday's 5-4 victory over Philadelphia.

The Blue Jays are batting .242 this season while scoring 456 runs on 949 hits. Toronto has hit 112 home runs with a .303 on-base percentage and .377 slugging percentage. The pitching staff owns a 4.02 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, with opponents batting .241. Toronto pitchers have recorded 1,031 strikeouts while issuing 423 walks.

Toronto's recent results have been encouraging, especially considering all five of those games were played on the road. The concern Sunday is that the Blue Jays don't have much power compared with Philadelphia, and Bieber's numbers create pressure on the offense to produce. A 5.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP leave very little margin for error against a Phillies lineup that has scored 60 more runs than Toronto this season.

Philadelphia Has the Starting Pitching Advantage

Philadelphia enters the weekend finale at 62-55 overall and 31-29 at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies have gone 3-2 over their last five completed games. Philadelphia defeated Washington 6-3 and 5-0 before losing 10-4 in 11 innings. The Phillies responded with a 7-3 victory over the Nationals before suffering Friday's 5-4 loss to Toronto.

Philadelphia is batting .238 with 516 runs, 930 hits and 145 home runs this season. The Phillies own a .307 on-base percentage and .401 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has recorded a 4.20 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, with opponents batting .251. Philadelphia pitchers have accumulated 1,140 strikeouts while issuing 352 walks.

The overall team numbers are closer than the records suggest, but Philadelphia owns significant advantages in power and run production. The Phillies have hit 33 more home runs and scored 60 more runs than Toronto. More importantly for Sunday, Luzardo provides Philadelphia with a substantial advantage on the mound. His 3.36 ERA and 1.16 WHIP compare favorably with Bieber's 5.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.

Toronto Blue Jays vs Philadelphia Phillies Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline

The Philadelphia Phillies are the pick to win Sunday's game.

Toronto has played competitive baseball recently and took Friday's opener, so the Blue Jays shouldn't be dismissed simply because of their losing overall record. However, the starting pitching matchup heavily favors Philadelphia.

Luzardo has been reliable across 136.2 innings, producing a 3.36 ERA and 1.16 WHIP while striking out 164. Bieber has only worked 37 innings and enters with a 5.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP. His 28 strikeouts against 20 walks are another concern against a Philadelphia offense capable of generating significantly more power than Toronto.

Philadelphia also owns the better overall record, has scored 60 more runs and gets home-field advantage. ESPN Analytics gives the Phillies a 68.7% chance of winning, and the statistical matchup supports Philadelphia as the stronger side.

Take the Philadelphia Phillies to win.

  • Pick: Over 8.5

The over is the preferred total if the number is set at 8.5.

Bieber's numbers create the clearest route toward a higher-scoring game. A 5.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP suggest Philadelphia should have opportunities to put runners aboard, while his seven home runs allowed in only 37 innings could become particularly problematic against a Phillies offense with 145 homers.

Luzardo gives Philadelphia a much better chance of controlling Toronto, but the Blue Jays have scored at least five runs in three of their last five completed games. Toronto also scored five against Philadelphia on Friday.

The Phillies should do enough of the offensive heavy lifting to make the over attractive, while Toronto has enough recent production to contribute.

Take the over if the total is set at 8.5.

Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies 6, Toronto Blue Jays 4
