Starting Pitchers

Washington is scheduled to start Cade Cavalli, who enters Sunday with an 8-4 record and a 3.55 ERA. Atlanta will counter with Martín Pérez, who owns a 6-6 record and a slightly better 3.49 ERA. There is not much separation between the starters based on earned-run average, but Cavalli has produced the stronger win-loss record. Both pitchers give their teams a reasonable chance to control the first half of the game.

Washington Tries to Reverse Its Recent Slide

Washington entered Saturday with a 55-56 overall record and a 23-34 mark away from home. The Nationals had lost three consecutive games and four of their previous five. They opened this series with a narrow 5-4 loss Thursday before falling 6-2 Friday night. Washington briefly cut Friday’s deficit to one run in the fourth inning but could not prevent Atlanta from breaking the game open later.

Despite the losing record, Washington has scored 602 runs while allowing 579, producing a positive run differential of 23. The Nationals average approximately 5.4 runs and 8.7 hits per game while batting .253 with a .329 on-base percentage. Their .446 slugging percentage and .775 OPS both rank among the strongest marks in baseball, while the lineup has also displayed an effective combination of power and speed.

Washington’s problem has been preventing runs consistently. The Nationals allow approximately 5.2 runs and nine hits per game, leaving Cavalli with an important assignment Sunday. If he can keep Atlanta from producing another decisive multi-run inning, Washington’s offensive numbers suggest it should have enough scoring ability to remain competitive. The Nationals cannot continue wasting productive offensive performances through inconsistent pitching and defensive execution.

Atlanta Looks to Complete a Strong Home Series

Atlanta carried a 65-45 record into Saturday and had gone 34-20 at Truist Park. The Braves had won three consecutive games and three of their previous five, including the first two matchups of this series. Friday’s 6-2 victory featured a four-run sixth inning that turned a close contest into a comfortable Atlanta win.

The Braves average approximately 4.9 runs and 8.4 hits per game. Atlanta is batting .249 with a .315 on-base percentage, a .415 slugging percentage and a .730 OPS. Although Washington holds the stronger offensive profile in several major categories, Atlanta has been much more reliable at preventing runs, conceding approximately four per game and 7.7 hits per contest.

That run-prevention advantage is the strongest argument for backing Atlanta in the series finale. The Braves have found different ways to win recently, recording a 1-0 victory over the New York Mets before scoring 11 runs across the first two games against Washington. Pérez does not need to dominate, but he must avoid allowing Washington’s power to create an early deficit. If he works effectively through the middle innings, Atlanta’s rested bullpen and stronger home record should become meaningful advantages.

Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves Picks and Prediction

Moneyline Pick:

  • Atlanta Braves

I am taking Atlanta to win the series finale. The starting-pitching matchup is relatively even, but the Braves have been the more dependable team overall and entered Saturday ten games ahead of Washington in the standings. Atlanta is also 34-20 at Truist Park, while Washington has struggled to a 23-34 road record.

The Nationals possess enough offensive firepower to make this a competitive matchup, which means I would avoid paying an excessive price on Atlanta. However, the Braves’ superior run prevention and home-field performance provide the stronger foundation for a moneyline selection.

Run Line Pick:

  • Washington Nationals +1.5

Washington plus 1.5 runs is my preferred run-line position. The Nationals have a positive run differential despite sitting below .500, and their strong offensive numbers give them the ability to remain within striking distance. Cavalli’s 8-4 record and 3.55 ERA also make Washington more attractive than the typical road underdog.

Atlanta can win without creating significant separation. With both scheduled starters carrying ERAs in the mid-threes, taking the additional run with Washington provides useful protection in a matchup that could remain close into the late innings.

Total Pick:

  • Under 9.5

I prefer the under if the total is set at 9.5. Washington’s season-long offensive production makes a lower number dangerous, but Cavalli and Pérez both enter with ERAs below 3.60. Atlanta has also been one of the better run-prevention teams, allowing approximately four runs per game.

Washington’s pitching numbers create some concern, but Cavalli represents one of its stronger starting options. I would play Under 9.5 confidently and consider Under 9.0 at a smaller stake. If the market falls to 8.5, the value becomes much less attractive.

Prediction: Atlanta Braves 5, Washington Nationals 4
