Washington Nationals vs Chicago Cubs Pick and Prediction September 6th, 2025
Two teams with different intentions for the end of the season will go head-to-head when the Chicago Cubs host the Washington Nationals on Saturday at 2:20 p.m. EST in Wrigley Field. Check out our Washington Nationals vs Chicago Cubs pick and prediction here!
Washington is still in the rebuilding phase, as they are 56-84 and last in the NL East division. They have won only three games out of their last ten and are looking forward to the offseason to make some new moves. Meanwhile, the Cubs are fighting for not only the top wild card spot, but also a chance at the division. They have an 81-60 record with a five-game lead over the Padres and Mets for the top wild card spot. However, they are 5.5 games behind the Brewers for the NL Central crown. The Cubs are huge favorites at a -250 money line while the total is set at nine runs. Can the Cubs continue to put pressure on the Brewers with a home win?

Washington Waiting for Next Year
The Nationals lost by a score of 11-5 in their latest outing. Luis Garcia Jr. hit a homer and had three RBI on the day while Daylen Lile chipped in the other two RBI. The latter was the only one with multiple hits on the day and aside from the two mentioned, nobody else got much going on offense. Jake Irvin lasted only 3.1 innings as the starter, giving up seven runs in the process. From there, the game was already over.
Washington made several moves at the trade deadline and while it doesn't help them for the rest of this season, it will be interesting to see how things play out over the coming years. Amed Rosario was sent to the Yankees for Clayton Beeter and Browm Martinez to start. Andrew Chafin was sent to the Angels with Luis Garcia for Jake Elder and Sam Brown next. Then, Kyle Finnegan was sent to Detroit for Josh Randall and R.J. Sales. Next, Alex Call was traded to the Dodgers for Sean Paul Linan and Eriq Swan. Finally, Michael Soroka was sent to Chicago for Ronny Cruz and Christian Franklin.
Brad Lord will take the mound as Washington's starter here. The righty has a 4.34 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP through 43 games (14 starts). He has 85 strikeouts through 103.2 innings pitched with a 4-8 record. For most of the season he has been used as an opener or a spot starter, but his role has increased in August, although his ERA has jumped dramatically as a result. He threw one scoreless inning against the Cubs in 2025, but the sample size is too small to judge anything based on that.

Chicago Climbing Up
The Cubs earned an 11-5 victory in their most recent contest against the Nationals. Ian Happ had three walks and a solo homer on the day while Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson, and Reese McGuire also homered for the Cubs. Swanson had a team-high three RBI but Willi Castro, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Hoerner had two RBI each to create a well-balanced attack. Javier Assad gave up four runs in 5.1 innings, but the bullpen held it down from there.
The Cubs didn't add much to their roster at the deadline, much to the chagrin of their fans. However, there are some names to be mentioned. Willi Castro was acquired from the Twins for Sam Armstrong and Ryan Gallagher. Michael Soroka was acquired from Washington for Ronny Cruz and Christian Franklin. Andrew Kittredge was acquired from Baltimore for Wilfri De La Cruz and Taylor Rogers was acquired from Pittsburgh for Ivan Brethowr. Whether that puts them over the top remains to be seen, but with the Dodgers, Padres, Brewers, Mets, and Phillies in the mix, it is tough for me to see them having a shot.
Matthew Boyd will take the hill as the starter for the Cubs in this one. He has had an excellent year with an ERA of 2.94 in 27 starts. Overall, the lefty has a record of 12-7 with a 1.07 WHIP and 142 strikeouts through 159.1 innings pitched. While he had a solid April and May to start the year, he really took off during the summer months with an ERA under 2.00 in both June and July. His August was his worst month of the year with a 4.54 ERA, but the Cubs are hoping Boyd will return to his elite form during September and the most important month in October.
Nationals vs. Cubs Pick
Spread Pick for Nats vs. Cubs
- Cubs -1.5
The Cubs should take care of business like they did today, as they have the motivation and the home crowd behind them. Washington is 27-42 on the road this year and Chicago is 8-2 against Washington in their last ten games. Brad Lord has not yet proven to be an effective starter and who knows what will come out of Washington's bullpen behind him. Meanwhile, Boyd is having a career year and the Cubs are clicking at the right time with a 5-2 record in their last seven overall.
Over/Under Pick for Nationals vs. Cubs
- Under 9
This is a bit of a tricky one, but I have more confidence in Matthew Boyd shutting down Washington's offense more than anything else. After the 11-5 victory, Washington will want to limit the number of runs scored in this one and put more of an emphasis on it. These two teams are 5-2 on the under in their last seven meetings and pitching should be the focus in this one.
