Nats surging in September
While it has come far too late to avoid missing the postseason and posting a losing record for the sixth straight season since 2019's World Series win, the Nationals are playing some good baseball to finish 2025. They have gone 7-1 so far in September with series wins over Miami and the Cubs, fueled by some big hits from veteran slugger Josh Bell. The first baseman was slashing .261/.320/.696 with three home runs in September, going into Tuesday's game and in the series opener, rocked Miami by going 4-for-6 with two homers and a season-best six RBIs, following that up with another home and four more RBIs as the Nats won out 7-1. Washington may soon have Keibert Ruiz back behind the dish: the catcher has missed more than two months with a concussion but started a rehab assignment at the weekend.
The Nationals will turn to Jake Irvin for Wednesday's game. The righty is struggling to finish the year, posting a 9.87 ERA and 2.02 WHIP over his last seven starts, including a tough outing last time around where he was hit for seven earned runs in 3.1 innings by the Cubs. For the season Irvin has gone 8-11 with a 5.71 ERA. He has lost eight of his last 11 starts.

Marlins have eye on third place
The Marlins looked to be rebuilding right from the start of the 2025 season, but while postseason ball is out of the question this year, they still have a good chance of taking third place in the NL East ahead of Atlanta, which looked like a real outside shot back in March. With less than 20 games remaining on the regular season schedule, Miami leads the Braves by a single game, despite starting September in a slump and losing six of their first seven games this month.
Eury Perez will start on the mound for Miami on Wednesday, his 17th start this year. Perez was one of the Marlins' breakout stars back in in his rookie season in 2023, but he then underwent TJ surgery and missed the whole of 2024. He was activated off the IL in June and has gone 6-5 with a 4.66 ERA. Perez is still looking to regain the stuff that made him such a star when he first came onto the scene, with his K/9 rate dropping from 10.64 in 2023 to 8.60 this term. He will be keen to bounce back after two rough starts where he gave up a total of 12 earned runs in 4.2 innings against the Mets and Nats.
Nationals vs. Marlins pick
Spread Pick for Nationals vs. Marlins
- Nationals ML (4 units)
I am backing the Nationals to take this one. Irvin has a strong record against Miami, putting up a 2.86 ERA in four starts. In his last trip to South Florida, he pitched six innings while giving up two runs to take the W. The Marlins have struggled to hit in front of their own fans all year and rank 23rd in MLB with a .694 OPS. Miami has a 3-9 record against Washington in the last 12 games played at LoanDepot Park and is 18-27 this year against NL East rivals.
Take the Nationals on the moneyline.
Over/under Pick for Nationals vs. Marlins
- Under (5 units)
Despite Irvin and Perez's recent struggles on the mound, I see Wednesday's game landing on the over. While Perez has had a rough time recently, the splits are in his favor: he has a 2.25 ERA pitching at LoanDepot Park compared to 6.44 on the road. On the hitting side, the Marlins have hit only 61 home runs in their own ballpark this year, tying for 26th in pro baseball. The Nationals are 31-42 on the over playing on the road in 2025. Miami has an O/U record of 33-40 at home.
Take the under.
