The Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres open a three-game series Monday afternoon at Petco Park in San Diego, California. First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 PM ET on September 7 with MLB.TV carrying the game. Washington enters at 67-77 overall and 34-37 on the road, while San Diego is 74-68 overall and 42-29 at home. The Nationals sit fourth in the NL East, 18 games behind Atlanta, while the Padres are third in the NL West, 11 games behind Los Angeles. Washington leads the season series 2-1 after taking two of three meetings earlier this year, but the Nationals enter Monday on a three-game losing streak. San Diego has dropped three of its last four completed games. ESPN Analytics gives the Padres a 52.8% chance of winning compared with 47.2% for Washington. Starting Pitchers

Washington is scheduled to start Will Dion, who enters at 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 37.1 innings. Dion has allowed 32 hits and 10 walks while recording 42 strikeouts and surrendering six home runs. San Diego counters with Randy Vasquez, who is 10-6 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.28 WHIP through 127.2 innings. Vasquez has allowed 129 hits and 35 walks while recording 79 strikeouts and giving up 15 home runs. Washington owns the better statistical profile in the starting matchup, with Dion carrying both the lower ERA and lower WHIP, although his workload has been considerably smaller.

Washington Needs Its Offense to Break Through

Washington enters Monday at 67-77 overall and 34-37 on the road. The Nationals have lost three straight after falling to Los Angeles by scores of 6-5 and 5-3 following a 9-0 loss to Atlanta. Washington has still won two of its last five completed games, including victories of 9-5 and 6-3. The Nationals also hold a 2-1 season-series advantage over San Diego after taking two of three in their first meeting.

The Nationals own the stronger offensive numbers across nearly every category supplied. Washington is batting .249 with 1,222 hits, 743 runs and 193 home runs while posting a .325 on-base percentage and .429 slugging percentage. San Diego is batting .236 with 1,105 hits, 598 runs and 155 home runs. Washington has therefore scored 145 more runs and hit 38 more home runs while also carrying the better batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Pitching has been the major weakness. Washington owns a 4.70 team ERA and 1.39 WHIP while opponents are batting .255. The Nationals have also issued 524 walks and recorded 1,125 strikeouts. Those numbers trail San Diego considerably and help explain why Washington has struggled to turn its superior offensive production into a winning record. Monday's starting matchup gives the Nationals a chance to offset that season-long weakness, but the staff numbers remain a significant concern.

San Diego Leans on Home Field and Better Pitching

San Diego enters Monday at 74-68 overall and has played much better at Petco Park, where the Padres are 42-29. They have lost three of their last five completed games, including a 5-1 home loss against New York in their most recent outing. San Diego's two victories during that stretch came by scores of 3-2 in 10 innings and 5-0. Despite Washington's advantage in the earlier season series, the Padres return home with the stronger overall record and a substantial home-field edge.

The Padres are batting .236 with 1,105 hits, 598 runs and 155 home runs while producing a .314 on-base percentage and .385 slugging percentage. Those figures are all below Washington's numbers, making offense the clear disadvantage for San Diego in this matchup. The Padres have scored 145 fewer runs and hit 38 fewer home runs than Washington, so they cannot rely on offensive production alone to control Monday's game.

San Diego has made up much of that difference with superior pitching. The Padres own a 3.92 team ERA and 1.29 WHIP while holding opponents to a .241 batting average. Washington enters with a 4.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and .255 opponent average. San Diego has also recorded more strikeouts while issuing fewer walks. That combination gives the Padres the stronger full-season run-prevention profile and is particularly important against a Washington offense that has been much more productive statistically.

Washington Nationals vs San Diego Padres Picks and Prediction

Pick: San Diego Padres Moneyline

San Diego is the preferred side despite Washington's advantage in offense and in the starting-pitcher statistics supplied. The Padres are seven games better in the overall standings and have been strong at Petco Park with a 42-29 home record. Their biggest advantage is the pitching staff, which owns a 3.92 ERA and 1.29 WHIP compared with Washington's 4.70 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Washington's 2-1 season-series lead and stronger offensive production make this a competitive matchup, but San Diego's home record and superior season-long pitching profile provide the more dependable foundation. The Padres moneyline is the preferred side.

Pick: Over 8

Over 8 is the preferred target number. Washington has one of the stronger offensive profiles in this matchup with 743 runs and 193 home runs, but its pitching staff also carries a 4.70 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. The Nationals have allowed at least five runs in each of their last four completed games, while three of Washington's last five have produced at least nine total runs. San Diego's pitching numbers provide some Under resistance, but Washington's combination of offensive production and weaker run prevention makes Over 8 the preferred total if that number is available.
