Starting Pitchers

Jackson Kent is scheduled to start for Washington after working only four innings at the major-league level. The left-hander has a 6.75 ERA and 2.00 WHIP, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out six. Texas counters with Cal Quantrill, who is 4-4 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 70.2 innings. The right-hander has allowed 63 hits and nine home runs while recording 49 strikeouts against 22 walks. Based on the available major-league numbers, Texas has a significant advantage in starting-pitcher experience and performance.

Washington's Offense Gives It a Chance

Washington enters Tuesday at 60-66 overall but has actually been better than .500 on the road at 33-30. The Nationals have lost three consecutive games, all against New York, by scores of 4-1, 5-4, and 4-3. They are just 1-4 across their last five despite recording a 7-0 victory during that stretch.

The Nationals are batting .251 with 670 runs, 1,083 hits, and 180 home runs. Washington owns a .327 on-base percentage and .437 slugging percentage. Pitching has been the weakness, with the Nationals carrying a 4.72 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while opponents are batting .258.

Washington's offense is easily its greatest advantage in this matchup. The Nationals have scored 163 more runs and hit 41 more home runs than Texas. They also hold sizable advantages in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. The question is whether their pitching can provide enough support for that offense.

Texas Needs to Capitalize on the Pitching Matchup

Texas enters at 61-64 overall and has performed better at Globe Life Field, where the Rangers are 32-27. Recent form has been a problem, however. Texas has lost four of its last five and has scored only 12 total runs during that stretch, including a 7-0 shutout loss.

The Rangers are batting .242 with 507 runs, 1,006 hits, and 139 home runs. Texas has a .315 on-base percentage and .394 slugging percentage. The pitching staff owns a 4.31 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while opposing hitters are batting .249.

Texas does not match Washington's offensive production, making the starting-pitching advantage particularly important. The Rangers have the better team ERA and WHIP, and Quantrill provides a much more established option than Washington's starter. If Texas can keep Washington's offense under control early, the Rangers should have an opportunity to take advantage of a Nationals pitching staff that has struggled throughout the season.

Washington Nationals vs Texas Rangers Picks and Prediction

Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline

Texas is the preferred side in a matchup that looks considerably closer than the teams' offensive numbers suggest. Washington owns the superior lineup statistics, but the pitching matchup points strongly toward the Rangers. Quantrill enters with a 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, while Kent has only four innings of major-league work and a 2.00 WHIP. Texas is also 32-27 at home, while its season-long pitching numbers are better than Washington's. Back the Rangers on the moneyline.

Pick: Over 8.5

Take the over if the total is set at 8.5. Washington has produced 670 runs and 180 home runs while carrying a .437 slugging percentage, giving the Nationals considerable offensive upside despite their recent losses. Their pitching staff is the other reason to look toward the over, with a 4.72 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Texas has struggled offensively lately, but this is a favorable opportunity for the Rangers to improve on those numbers. Over 8.5 is the preferred total.
